is there malware out there that kills flash drives?
I’ve had two of the freebie 16gb microcenter flash drives die on me in a matter of days… I can’t think that they’d be making crap that would die so quickly… I’m not that unlucky.

Seeing “BadUSB” reminds me of the old “BADBIOS” story - still unconvinced if BADBIOS was true and could do all that was claimed, but the USB side was certainly one very firm claim - USB devices would be infected, and would infect systems, and were uncleanable by formatting.
