Second Layer burn fails

I am having trouble burning double layer disks. The burn fails when the Lite-on recorder goes to the second layer. The burner works OK on single layer disks and CDs. I have burned a couple of double layer disks in the past but not reliably. More failures than successes. No success at all since I re-installed Windows and upgraded the firmware on the DVD writer. I have inserted the Nero 7 Log file. The computer is a Gigabyte K8NS Pro AMD Atholon 64 +3400. Any help is appreciated.

Here is one problem:

Ritek dual layer disks are absolute garbage. If you want to burn to dual layer, you need to buy Mitsubishi Chemical Corp disks, usually found in the US as Verbatim brand.
They are, at the present time, the only reliable dual layer disks to be had.

As a side note, you might want to edit out your serial number at the top of your post. If it is too late to do so, send a note to one of the moderators of the forum to remove it. I may be wrong, but I think it is up there, just below Home.

Kerry56 is absolutlly right. Ritek dual layer media is total crap. This is supported by this error from your log, Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR), which is most often caused by poor quality or incompatible media. Get some verbatium as it is the only commonly avalable dual layer media that is giving everyone decent results. To go a little further, if you are trying to backup a dual layer disk, use dvd decryptor to rip (in iso mode if I recall right) and use image burn to burn (img burn is a newer version of dvd decryptor but lacks the ability to rip due to legal reasons). That method will get the layer break properlly placed.

Your recollection is exactly right. Right now, dvdd is still ok for burning DLs, but as you said, Img is the way to go, as it will continue to be developed.

I’ve had nothing but bad luck burning DL discs with Nero. i use this Guide to burn DL discs. It allows you to pick your own layer break and preview it if you want. It looks technical but it’s actually pretty easy.

Thanks for the media and utility suggestions. I think that 20 Vebatim DVD+R DL are on sale for $40. I will give them a try.

Thats the going price (when on sale). Never seen them cheaper but I have seen that for that price several times, its a good deal.
