Searched, but still need help

I am using anydvd and nero with a mad dog 7 in 1 16x external drive. I was using clone dvd successfully and then when I used some fujifilm dvd-r I got coaster after coaster. I went back to the maxwell that I was having success with and coaster after coaster. clone dvd kept giving me the “bad media” error. I updated mad dog’s firmware and no help there either. I have run a simulation on Nero and here is the log, your help would be greatly appreciated.

from what i understand, your drive = OEM NEC ND-3500AG. you might want to check the NEC forum for ways of flashing the drive with other firmwares. also, Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) is almost always a media problem, either the drive don’t like the media or the disc itself is crap, or you are attempting to burn too fast for that disc.

thanks so much, let me check out those options - hope something works out from there.

Prior to switching to the Fujifilm DVD-R media, did you change any settings either with your burning software or with your drive?

No, I didn’t change any settings. The Maxwell fifty pack I had, maybe I had three coasters and at first I chalked it up to me needing to restart the computer because once I did the burn was fine. The fujifilms also burned the first three discs I backed up, but then coaster after coaster. Same thing for the last couple of Maxwell’s I had (so that’s why I didn’t think it was the media itself). I have a new pack of maxwell’s “made in japan” and I ordered Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r from a reputable online place, so we’ll see once those are delivered. I was wondering if it would be worth it to uninstall the drive and software and reinstall it.

Stop using coffee beans then

sorry i just had to do it

okay so I finally got a successful backup on the maxwell dvd-r  . I turned off my screensaver, virus protection, and firewall and reduced speed down to 2x and finally got a burn and the dvd seems to be working fine. Also I read that I shouldn’t do too many back to back burns. So hopefully little to no coasters as long as I keep doing this. For the coasters, would i still be able to burn on them if it never got past 0% (clone dvd just did that “erasing” thing and then gave bad media error)?

Anyways thanks for your help G)-(osters and Mike A  .

turning off the background apps was good because i noticed it said 70% of your memory was in use, and thats a bad thing especially for external drives. I also noticed that the drive was trying to do something with the book-type. maybe that had something to do with it as well. Since your drive will burn dvd+r as a dvd-rom maybe you should try some +r discs. Changing the book-type makes the discs as compatible as -r discs.
