First of all Maxtor=Seagate - the latter bought the former a few years ago. I don't know what differences there are between the mainstream 1GB discs sold under the two brands, but considering I agree that Seagate should be avoided since there are probably more nasty surprises hidden in its firmware, it is probably a good idea to avoid Maxtor as well.
I recently bought a new 1GB disc myself and had a look at various reviews and pricing and got a Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B 1TB since it was amongst the fastest on the various benchmarks, had relatively low power consumption and was quiet (meaning it seems it was designed with a sensible balance between different demands). I'm very pleased with it, at least so far - it is obvious that it is faster than my old disc (Seagate 7200.9) and it is reasonably quiet. I'd recommend it. It was of course not a disadvantage that it turned out to be the cheapest one as well at the time I bought it Remember that the ".B" in the end is very important - the 7K1000 is another model that is several years old and rather a lot worse.
The Samsung spinpoint F1 was my second choice.
