I just bought an Optiarc AD-7201S as I thought SATA would be good for a 16x DVD recording.
Unfortunately things are not going well, but it's too early to blame it to the recorder.
I've been off hardware for a while, so I need some help!
The main thing I've noticed is bandwidth issues, slow reading and definitely slow writing which is unusual!
Running on XP with customised hotfixes/updates of SP1 and SP2
I have an ASUS A8V Deluxe Rev.2 mobo
Chipset: K8T800 Pro
CPU: AMD Athlon 4400+
HDs: internal: Maxtor 300GB SATA, WD120GB (ancient) IDE, externals: Lacie 300GB Firewire
IDE: LiteOn DVD-R SOHW 1633S, DVD drive: Pioneer 106
I use Nero for burning,
Recording on IDE works fine, no buffer issues at 8X which is the maximum speed of the LiteOn DVD-R.
I don't use RAID, or SATA RAID, there is a SATA Maxtor 300GB on SATA port 1 and the Optiarc on SATA 2 (SATA RAID ports 3 and 4 are empty)
I believe there is a Promise RAID controller on board which is disabled.
When I bought the NEC Optiarc I just plugged it on (and I guess that's how it should be). It seemed to work fine until I tested the recording.
I used TY-03G disks to test 16x and it was very slow, took about 40 mins.
I tried 12x and then 8x using my previous TY-02G disks and things didn't go well either, the buffer kept dropping to 25% and coming back. It rings a bell when I had issues with the VIA controllers on IDE recorders but this one is SATA and I'm not sure how to treat the issue.
I don't think the problem is the disks because the reading is also very slow and TY disks are super good any way. Could it be the BIOS of the Optiarc? I don't know, I will check the version and update you. I also think this model is quite new on the market so I couldn't find much reference to other people.
Your help will be much appreciated and please don't hesitate to ask more questions about the specs if you need so.
