SATA burner as drive 1

Hi Gentlemen, I wish to add a SATA burner. I have one SATA hard drive which is drive 0. Can I add the SATA burner as drive 1 or is drive 1 only for another hard drive? I am looking at a Samsung burner from Newegg.

Thanks

Hi,

I assume you have connected your HDD to the SATA1 port (or how it is named on your motherboard). If you connect another drive (it does not matter if that is a HDD or an optical drive), this will be drive 1 then, provided it is connected to the “SATA2” connector.

Apart from this, it does not matter which number is assigned to the drive.

OK, thanks, I just wanted to know if they would co-exist on the same controller. I am assuming that the HD is on SATA1 port with port 2 open. The drives in the BIOS are numbered 0 and 1.

You might encounter problems with certain Sata chipsets (older Via) or with Sata configurations that are designed for HDDs like Raid (avoid) or AHCI (might work with appropriate drivers).
Most compatible setting is IDE.
