Samsung SH-S222A fails burning

Hi. I got a TSSTCORP SH-S222A writer and bought it 9 months ago and rarely used it (maybe 40 burns). It worked fine until now. It suddenly fails burning DVD+R’s (rw’s too).

I think the drive died but thats quite soon huh ? It wasn’t expensive but I just don’t like drives dying THIS soon.

I can burn fine with the other burner in my system so its not a software issue and I checked that DMA was on for all burners. Also I can read discs fine with the SH-S222A.

I’ll post my Nero Log and hope someone can tell me something about what can be broken inside the drive.

Hi,
I tried burning with another program to maybe give more insight in my dysfunctioning dvd-writer.
(…)
I 03:36:47 Write Speed: MAX
Does it help it you set a burn speed instead of MAX?
Additionally, the media you are using might be of questionable quality, so testing with known-good stuff should help to rule out any issues with the drive.
Also, make sure you have the “hide writeable media” option in Daemon Tools disabled.

Michael

I set it to MAX as the DVD+RW is detected 8x by the drive’s firmware and its normal rating is 8x too. It also failed writing DVD+R 16x (verbatim) which the drive’s firmware says 20x can be done but I always set the burn speed at 16x.

 • I don’t have such an option with my Daemon Tools (guess its a too old version) and I CAN burn fine with another DVD-writer in the same system (also ATA connected) so if it would be Daemon Tools’ fault it would fail with the other DVD-writer too.

Any replies from other people who know what can be wrong with the DVD-writer by reading my 2 LOG-files is still welcome.

I think not many read inside the samsung subforum since no-one replies

Any opportunity to try the drive in another computer?
Or get a Live Linux CD (Ubuntu, Kanotix, etc.), boot from that disc and see if there is the same problem with that drive.

Michael

Check your firmware, use better media such as Verbatim readily available or Taiyo Yuden available online. It also looks like your Dvd+Rs are not being booktyped to Dvd-Rom.

I returned the drive to the shop (I claimed warranty) so there’s no need to help me out anymore. The thread may be closed.
