Samsung SH-S203B

Is this drive a good choice for quality scanning?

Also what is the difference between the SH-S203B and SH-S203D model? What would be the best choice between the two?

Until someone is willing to review SH-S203D, the difference is unknown.

There are already several other threads asking basically the same question, e.g.

When just comparing the specs, then the difference is DVD-R DUAL is 16x on SH-S203B and only 12x on SH-S203D

Have look yourself:
SH-S203D: http://www.samsungodd.com/Eng/Products/Spec/spec.asp?functionvalue=view&parent_idx=4133&level_idx=4412
SH-S203B: http://www.samsungodd.com/Eng/Products/Spec/spec.asp?functionvalue=view&parent_idx=4133&level_idx=4403

On some online shop I found the SH-S203D access time for CD-ROM with 130ms and DVD-ROM with 150ms higher than for the SH-S203B, but this is unconfirmed and could well be a mistake.

When looking at scans thread for SH-S203D, I’m not quite sure whether you get the same good burning quality like on the SH-S203B. I’d be careful if you asked me…

Also, some write speeds are different for the same media. MCC004 is supported @18x with 203D and @20x with 203B.

Hi,

I can see the question of what the difference between the 203D and 203B is, is not solved.
in the last link of the 4 links provided above ( http://club.cdfreaks.com/f105/whats-…-d-n-p-235612/ ) one guy wanted to test both.

Now, I have a 203 D and the 203 B seems to be the more expensive and faster version.
But the D is more compatible.

Question: I want to upgrade my 203D SB00 firmwared burner, which oddly was never any update offered by samsung, with the 203B SB04 firmware.

Can i do that ?

Or will the burner then be not accessible anymore ?

Question: I want to upgrade my 203D SB00 firmwared burner, which oddly was never any update offered by samsung,
you have ignored the firmware announcement thread, marked as Read First.

with the 203B SB04 firmware.

Can i do that ?
You can get new doorstops cheaper.

I don’t believe the 203B fw is compatible with the D version of the drive maybe a
small difference in internal hardware or something like that.

Really ???

ok, thank you !

What is different in the hardware: is one better than the other, or is it just another setting of precision, which means higher possible speeds but generally more jitter?
like a formula 1 car with a rain setup, which isnt that fast, but ready for rain ?

I doubt, the 203D was released because it is better or optimised.
Availability of components and their price is often a reason to replace a product by a successor model.

Michael

yeah i didnt mean it is better everywhere.

just optimised for high speed burning but less compatible medias, etc.

i found the 203D FR/FB (fastread fastburn) files.

I think it is secure to flash them, isnt it ?
