Samsung SH-B123L BD Riplock?

Hi

I’m looking to buy the Samsung SH-B123L will mainly use it for ripping BD to HDD.

Wanted to know if this drive is ripped locked or if it will rip BD x 12 out of the box.

If it is riplocked is there a patch? If not what is the fastest BD ripping drive out at the moment.

Thanks

It is and there isn’t. I am considering this drive but I don’t think there are any firmware patches to remove riplock on this drive. The Liteon rewriter x12 drive is the fastest I believe but costs a lot more. Many Liteon drives do have riplock removed firmware but do check to be certain.

Got a model no. for the x12 Liteon?

Thanks

Some seaching around seems to imply there is no riplock, but it is unclear to say the least. Here below also the link for SB03 latest fw, not sure if it removes riplock:

I am hoping someone on this forum can confirm if this combo drive has riplock or not.

Riplock and region free are entirely different things. What I have seen of this drive suggests there is Riplock just like there is with most drives which don’t have a firmware patch to remove it. Just because one person questions whether there is doesn’t mean that the drive isn’t Riplocked.

The price is the most attractive feature for that drive but for ripping I don’t think it’s the fastest available. I don’t own the drive so I can only post what I have read.

I think that deanwitty on this forum who posted to my thread about Blu Ray scanning might own a Samsung drive so he might be able to confirm whether it does have Riplock. He has a different model but suggests that all Samsung drives have Riplock. Not conclusive by any means but from everything that I have seen and read, it does look that way. By all means prove this wrong if you can but as a Ripper, I don’t think the Samsungs are the best option.

SB03 is not the latest firmware. Samsung released SB04 two weeks ago.

You can get it here as usual: http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/Firmware/FWDownload/FWDownload.asp

Although the SH-B123L is a 12x drive, when it comes to ripping, they will read both BD-ROM SL and BD-ROM DL pressed movie discs at 6x. The 12x LiteON drives can do it at 8x.

This in depth SH-B123L review: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=28410 and to a certain extent this one: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/review/review-of-samsung-sh-b123l-12x-bd-romdvd-writer/ should give you a pretty good idea about what to expect from these drives …
