Samsung SH 203B - Doesnt Recognize Blank Media

Hi All
Having a problem with 2 Samsung SH 203B drives which is probably software related. Both of these drives on my Windows XP Pro system are not working when I insert Blank media no matter which type of CD or DVD I get a drive is not accessible. I installed these drives about 3 weeks ago and didn’t have a problem til recently. Things I have tried to make it work

1.uninstalled most of the Burning software I was using.
2. Tried to used MS Autoplay repair.
3. Full virus and spyware scans.
4. Reinstalled Windows using repair mode.

I found out while testing that the Recording Tab was missing so I checked the registry per a MS bulletin http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH and found out my drive is being recognized as a CDROM which is why it wont Autoplay with blank media as it has a 3 showing for drive type

Well hope someone has some ideas to try as no way I will format and start over I have too much software installed

What should happen when you insert a BLANK media??

Get a real burning app like Imgburn or cdburnerxp and burn the stuff onto your blanks.

I have burning software installed now. I use Nero 8, Prassi ONES 2.1 and ImgBurn as my main programs. I removed a few other programs that i recently installed in case there was a conflict with them. The 3 programs I use now I know work well together. I can burn things fine. The problem when i insert blank media I believe the system thinks I have a read only device and I don’t get the popup window to choose my burning app. I think if you read this page will explain it better than me

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316529

btw I did get the recording tab back following the instructions but as soon as i used any blank media tab was removed and it went back to how I started

Upper and Lower Filters maybe?

Checking U/L filters, use busTRACE (also in chef signature).
http://www.bustrace.com/products/devfilter.htm

BTW, do you have any emulating software like Alcohol or daemon tools installed. This kind of apps can have “hide media” function set on by default.

Alcohol 52 was installed just removed it no change. Also I just got the buslace program not sure how to read the info. Also used the CD-DVD Capabilities Viewer. Here some pics. I have no idea how these filters work or how to repair them.

Its busTrace and nothing else.

Expand the drive/-s you have problem with (by clicking on drive name). Attached pic says nothing.
Edit, adding example how it can look, pic.

BTW, getting these busy errors all the time, forum would been better off skipping that crap called “chat-box” or whatever at top of page.

thats my readings now atm. I cant seem to post pictures atm :frowning:

When using any burning engine you must have upper filter. Still playing around with emulation? Stop with that because you’r only confusing our troubleshooting help.

Posting pics? Read linked guide;

Lower filter must be atapi.

so how do I repair this ?
so how do I repair this ?
By giving all details. Period. :flower:

BTW, in windoze redbook and atapi that’s all what burning is about.

This server is to busy atm for me to post any pictures so how can I get you the information you need?

Ok I uninstalled all my CD/DVD apps and heres how my filter look now. I dont understand what I am looking for with these filters.

Hmmm…
I remember having the same problem once, when my two BenQ’s DW1650 (ok, one was a Philips originally) were running on same firmware. I had to use different firmwares to separate them apart when choosing the drive to burn with.

Can it be this simple. (Don’t think so in your case though.)

Off topic.
BTB, S203N is the same as S203B, but LS is nice to have and I can keep a record of what drive I’m using.

Well after further testing I still have this problem with blank media. I did some registry tweaking of the filters, reinstalled ONES, and disabled 1 Drive so I could eliminate it as the problem. Here my recent shot of filters. The dirve has no problem burning and media and its super fast It just not being seen as a recordable drive. At least that all that I think is going on

This is what i get with any blank media type

I just tried a Liteon USB drive with same problems

Well it appears that my system is seeing my burners as read only devices and that why they having a problem with all blank media. my registry is is probably
mucked up. I did the editing where it made the record tab appear but its not really helping as the system still thinks my drive is not recordable and the tab disappears after awhile. A reinstall of windows didnt help and used PC Tools Registry Mechanic with no help.

It’s hard to help when we are not there. We do our best.

Just to see if the drives work, if you can put them in another pc.
