Samsung SH 183L HELP ME!

Okay so I first bought a Sony NEC Optiarc 18X (AD-7170S) (yes I know this is the samsung section but read me out) well it was giving me this “DMA-driver error, CRC error” I looked around and couldn’t find someone else with the same error so I decided to RMA it as defective.
I tried countless media with that drive thinking that maybe I just had a bad batch and it was pointless, wouldn’t even burn CD’s (tried memorex, & tdk… at 48x 24x and 8x I believe and still wouldnt work…) also tried burining DVDs (Adata & Verbatim at speeds as slow as 2x… still they all gave that error) after I RMA’d it I bought my current Samsumg SH-183L and it has the same problem… well it gives me the same error “DMA-driver error, CRC error” I have also tried buring differnt media, different cables and I just have no idea what to do any more as I am pretty sure the drive isn’t defective (would be too weird to get two drives from two differnt manufactures with the same deffect if you ask me, pretty sure it would be as statisticaly imposible as winning the lottery)

any suggestions?

My System is as follows

Opteron 170 (at stock speed, for now…)
DFI LanParty UT Ultra D NForce4
1GB OZC Ram Platnium Rev 2
34.4 GB WD Raptor 16MB Cache (Boot & Installation drive)
500 GB Samsung 16MB Cache (Used storage)
Radeon X850XT (at stock speed)

[Not sure if any of that is revelant but just thought I would post it just incase]

Your log says:

You need to get DMA working on your drives. Here’s a link.

I dont think that is possible with SATA is it?

Well even your hard drives are not running UDMA.

What SATA driver do you have with your mobo?

How can i check that? How can update it?
my hard drives are also SATA. Does SATA have DMA?

I guess in a way SATA runs DMA. DMA is a faster connection than PIO for IDE drives.

What mobo do you have? What SATA drivers/controllers are you using?

Edit:

Sorry you have it listed

Are you running raid on you hard drives?
Some one else had similar problem with same drive. You might do a search and see if you can find it.

i have a DFI LanParty UT Ultra D NForce4 mother board

i do not know what SATA drivers I am using, is there a way i can check that?

and before i forget thanks for the quick responses =)

n/p

Look in Device Manager and see what SATA controller/drivers you have.

Well i think this should help out…

or im i completely off on what you want to know?

Yes that will work. I don’t have Nforce board,Nvidia drivers sorry so maybe someone else will come give a few answers for you.

Thats okay man, thanks for trying.
Any one else have any idea?

Use the microsoft drivers instead of the Nvidia drivers. You can try uninstalling the Nvidia controller in device manager and allow windows install the microsoft drivers. Also I’d suggest using Imgburn to burn your dvd media instead of Nero Burn.

Whats that for??

Multisession type: : Start multisession

Uh, the creepiest media:

Recorder: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: PRINCO -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193

I would first replace the sata cable and check the BIOS/SATA settings.
And update the sata drivers.

Hi,

Nero always reports “DMA = off”, if a drive is connected to a controller that is operated by manufacturer’s drivers instead of MS default IDE drivers.

Michael

It’s a hardware error. What do you suggest?

Why should that be an “hardware error”??

This is just how Nero handles 3rd party ide drivers in thelog.

I’m talking about this entry:

Sense Key: 0x04 (KEY_HARDWARE_ERROR)

In the 1st post this person is having DMA issues.

I’ll just stay out of this thread
I don’t have this board nor the drivers for it but i do have that same drive and it’s works fine for me.

Hi,

which is followed later by a DMA error.

In the 1st post this person is having DMA issues.
Such is often caused by buggy IDE drivers, and not really a matter of hardware. The original poster should really try MS default drivers and see if that helps. If not, then there might be really some issue with the hardware, but then it has to be narrowed down further.

Michael

Care to elaborate on that?
I’m rather new on all this SATA thingy, but AFAIK windoze XP “out of the box” doesn’t support SATA drives.
M$ IDE drivers for SATA drives? But then, you maybe had something else in mind for us.

:iagree:
nVidia homepage can be a good start to begin a search. (BTW, IIRC XP SP1 also has to be installed before.)
