[qanda]This thread is about the Samsung SE-W164C. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I have a rather strange situation,
I own a ibook G4 (mac) tiger 10.4.11

The DVD drive stopped working the other day, and I can’t really afford buying a new mac or DVD drive, but my dad had this Samsung SE-W164C DVD burning device that he didn’t use.
Now I’m using it to import CD’s and watch DVD’s. But the thing is that I have lived in North-America and Europe so I have both NTSC and PAL DVD’s (region 1 and region 2). The Driver is currently set on R1 (and works great for them) and when I insert a DVD from R2 I get a message telling me that I will only be able to change the region setting 4 times.
Obviously 4 times isn’t enough, so I would like to find a way to watch the DVD’s region free.
I was thinking is there any hack I can use?
would a decrypter work?

Hi and Welcome!

(…) this Samsung SE-W164C DVD burning device that he didn’t use.
Which is the same as SH-W162C thrown into an enclosure.

I would like to find a way to watch the DVD’s region free.
I was thinking is there any hack I can use?
You may try patching the firmware with MCSE (your drive {SH-W162C} is on the list of supported drives at least). Please have a look into the FAQ (see my signature) for details.
Please note, you need a computer running Windows to patch and flash the drive.
