Hello friends,

Sorry to dig up this thread again, but, after reading it carefully, and using the same drive myself (lots of articles on tech maganizes state that this is a very good drive, one of the 10 best in the market), and after facing some of the issues you have had (with the Melody media, I’ve bought, and other no label media, from Taiwan), when recording at 2x, I had to make other experiments, so that I could understand a bit more about the issue itself.

So, I’ve bought a great quantity of different media, and I’ve only encountered that issue with the Melody media… usually I only use Panasonic, since my backups are to be kept for a long time, but with either Sony, Verbatim, Panasonic and TDK, I didn’t see any quality issue whatsoever… so, maybe it’s only a media issue…since that using melody at 4x the quality is not bad, at all…

Sorry to bother you. Greetings from Portugal :-)
Thanks for your comments, crowley666. In addition to the 2x issue with Melody (INFOMER30) media, I had a very similar issue when burning at 2x on Value Disc 6x BD-R (CMCMAGBA5) media. The Melody issue persisted through the release of the SE-506CB and two firmware revisions (TS00 --> TS01 --> TS02), which was especially troubling. However, you’re right that the drive does burn other media fine (MEIRA1, for example) and the above Taiwanese media at 4x and above. If you’re sticking with other media and speeds, you’ll probably be fine.

Yes, my friend, I only use Panasonic, with the original MID, from Japan, Verbatim, with the Verbat MID, TDK, and, every now and then Sony… but I try to use ONLY Panasonic… they are great… oh, yes, I’ve tried the CMCMAGBA5 disks as well… and yes, the same thing happens… when burning 2x, it goes sky high… as for all the others, the speed keeps on going at 2 - 2.2x  Cheers

This is very sad for me. I have bunch of CMCMAG BA5 media and i can’t burn them slower than 6x. I select 2x or 4x in whatever burn application or OS and this burner writes them only at 6x. I could burn them at selected 6x as results seems to be far better then. However, since my computer lacks an usb 3 I really can’t burn them at 6x as near the end of the writing process the usb 2 speed limit will kick in and burning speed will drop drastically, not to mention quality…
