My Samsung SD-616Q reads DVD-R's without any problem. Just note that very few drives can read DVD-R's at anything above 6x. I'm using eProformance DVD-Rs and going by Nero CD speed, the start speed is 2.4x and the end speed is 6.2x in my Samsung DVD-ROM.
If you do take the risk of flashing your Samsung with 'Q' firmware, be sure to make a backup of your old firmware first. Also, check what version of MTKFLASH is suitable for your drive. I tried using the latest version (1.62 at time of writing) and after it flashed my drive, the drive would no longer eject the tray or be recognised by the BIOS or Windows XP. I tried running MTKFLASH again with the original firmware as well as RPC1 firmware, but each flashed without success
I was lucky to find out later in a forum that this drive can only be flashed with MTKFLASH 1.48. I got hold of this older version, retried the flash with the RPC1 firmware and the drive came back to life
Good luck flashing
