Good to see this happening. Having UHD players is about the last thing left to put in place for the proliferation of 4k content.

“Blu-ray that we’ve seen in the past only have 8 bit color depth, which gives slightly more than 16 million variations in color. 10 bit color depth allows over a billion color variations.” Experts estimates of how many color variations the human eye can differentiate vary from 100,000 to 10 million, so it’s good that this can do a billion. In fact, The Visual Neurosciences Volumes 1 and 2 from The MIT Press in 1993 says there are only about 100,000 or so discriminable colors in existence.

^Those are maximum values BradWright. Color grading is more accurate with 10bit. And you get better efficiency in compression at any given bit rate.

It’s good that these 4k disks have 1 billion colors, but since the human eye can only see about 10 million (maximum), I really don’t see the point. Likewise for the 60fps, since the human eye can only see about 30 (maximum). I’ll bet this new format also exceeds the amount of detail (resolution) that the human eye can see. So, if you have super-human eyes, or you are prone to the power of suggestion, this will be a great boon to you. For the rest of us, it’s just a useless tech placebo.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned the color depth? You guys seem hung up on it. 10 bit encoding allows greater color accuracy (relative to the original source material) with the HEVC encoders, and helps in compression.

Posterization (also called banding), for example, is reduced by the greater sampling depth and you’ll see better, smoother transitions in areas where you have similar colors or in dark backgrounds.

More than a few video experts have stated that its HDR that will “wow” people more than 4K does. Most people will buy 4K TV only because that’s all that’s available (soon). The same is true of players.

It’s hard to tell and I think it will all depend on the number of adopters.

A lot of people are still perfectly happy with DVD and for those that aren’t plenty will still be happy with Blu-ray so my gut feeling is that it will be a lot harder for UHD to make some headway but you never know.

I would agree. Optical media is already struggling (ie Bluray sales are only a fraction of what DVD sales were at their peak).

In my own circumstance, I have a 60 inch TV and I sit around 12 to 14ft away from it.  I wouldn’t really want a bigger TV in the living room (there’s just enough extra room that I can fit a small table with a record player). 60" at 12 to 14ft really isn’t going to benefit from 4k.   I was all over HD and 1080p when it came out because SD looks mediocre on all the new flatscreen sets.   I don’t feel the same way about HD/Bluray.  Bluray looks awesome on my TV (HD cable could be better).

I’m not sure UHD catches on with the masses as I think a lot of people are like me.   Hopefully its popular enough that it becomes a niche market like laserdisc, and those who like it can buy it.

Well I’ve had a HDTV if some sort since 2005 when I got a 34 inch Toshiba cinemae series crt HD set.
Then I was given a 42" Sony led set and later a 50" Sony led set and I liked all of them. I can see the difference and want a UHD set as soon as I can afford one, just so much smoother and crisp. And the color gradients are much improved so more variance and smoother like said without banding. Would love to get a OLED set but probably end up with a full array led due to the cost. There are some great deals on bigger sets now for anyone that wants one and has the cash.
I try not to buy DVD movies now, Blu Ray when done right looks so much nicer and just watch for deals on movies I want.

60 inch is a good size, mine’s only 40" as I bought it quite a few years ago when these things were expensive and went for picture quality over size.

So if I do upgrade size wise then it’ll be a UHD TV. Otherwise, like yourself, I’m pretty much happy with HD either via Blu-ray or satellite TV.

No doubt these are the 3 & 4 layer BD discs that are called BDXL… seems they wand to copy the nomenclature of the SDHC > SDXC hype (eXtra LAYER , eXtra CAPACITY).

IMO, 4k UHDTVs have plenty of development left… namely, reducing the POWER CONSUMPTION, LOWERING LATENCY (240hz+ <5ms latency response) and… content, and pricing to hit mainstream…

Hopefully they can do that before I buy my next TV…Â
Sometimes when I see an UHDTV (4k) image frozen or low motion video… I get the sense I’m looking at a HD cartoon image (probably becasue it’s so damn clear)… anybody else feel that way?

But the biggest problem I see here is if your viewing TV isn’t 4K then having all that toy is basically worthless.
