Samsung today announced the world’s first MicroSD memory card successor, the UFS card. The cards are based on a new standard that will become the successor to microSD and should read data 5 times faster than its predecessor.

I do wish they would use a different name. In my mind, “UFS” stands for Unix File System. What’s next, are they going to develop “Journalist’s Flash Storage”, or “JFS” cards? The commercials will probably say something like “the ultimate mobile storage, for the ultimate journalist.”

Anyway, I do wonder how many devices are going to support UFS cards. If Samsung really wants to replace MicroSD cards, they will need as much support from as many manufacturers as possible. Otherwise, UFS will go the way of Jaz and ZIP drives.
