So last month I purchased Lite-on drives, which turned out to be completely rubbish as after a 'successful' burn some discs would appear blank?! Returned them and replaced with Samsung 224DB, which again has turn out to be rubbish! What has happened to drives now days?! Some where always better than others, but they all still worked and done the basics OK. Now I can't seem to find a single drive that will actually work.
This issue I have with the 224DB is that it creates what I can only describe as 'burn rings'. Image if you burn half a disc so you can clearly see where data has burnt up to, and that's similar to what I'm seeing, although three burn rings on a full data burn.
Although I already know my setup is not the issue as other makes of drives are working just fine, I've tried different sata/power cables etc but to no avail. I can also rule out media being the issue because it creates these burn rings with all different types of media. Nero disc quality can be anything from ZERO to 70 at best, and all very random.
The burn rings seem to have some relation to the burn speed and there appears to be a different ring for each time the speed steps up as data is written further towards the outside. First ring measures 0.7cm, second 0.9cm and third 2cm and that is consistent.
Any ideas why this would be happening and how to fix please? I've not updated firmware as yet because I can't actually locate Samsung official F/W page! There support page for this drive is basically this...
Anyway know of any drives left that 'just work'? Only appears to be two drives left for me to try which is the Asus, although I believe I read this is just a re-badge Lite-on which I've already tried, and then LG.
