RITEKG05 in Sony DRU510,TYG02 in NEC 2500A?

Hi dvd gurus,
I got a bit of a mystery here. Please help me solve it.
I purchase some RITEKG05 from Meritline. The RITEKG05 has always been the best for me to back up my new PS2 games. As I was trying it out, I found out that all my backed up does not work at all. As burn the same image to my older RITEKG05, they worked perfectly. Then I begin to suspect the quality of the media. As checked the media in the dvdinfo in my NEC 2500A drive (flashed with 2k5107v2b5dl) it says its a TYG02. As i was about to RMA the new stack of media, i double checked the media with my second drive (the sony dru510) the media is being shown as RITEKG05!!!

What is going on? has this happen to any of you here? I checked the rest of the media in that new stack, they are all the smae way! TYG02 in my NEC and RITEKG05 in my sony…

If its my NEC flash faulty, why does my older RITEKG05 works perfectly?
If the media is not RITEKG05, why its shown as RITEKG05 in my sony Drive?

Please help guys!! Much appreciated!!! :iagree:

Is there a host in this forum that can help?

Hey, you’re not alone. I too purchased Ritek G05 from meritline, and running into the same media code issues as you. I also have an NEC 2500, and the media code listed indeed was Taiyon Yuden (TYG02). I also have a second burner, (Benq) as the media code showed up as RITEKG05. I’ve burned 3 coasters with my NEC, but haven’t tried the media on my BENQ yet. (rebuilding workstation).

Were you successful burning the media with your Sony drive?
I suspect NEC drives are not compatible burning at 8x with this media. If so, I still haven’t figured out why the media code listed in our NEC lists TYG02. To be determined… =)

Hi, Im new to the forum, actually came here looking for an explanation for this subject. I bought a 50 pack of Ritek G05 from Meritline and my NEC 2500 with original firmware lists the TYG02 code in DVDinfo. Not sure if it is of any use but here is the rest of the info from dvdinfo:

I suppose if they are genuine it would be a good purchase for 25$ shipped.

Have you achieved any successful burns?

The faked TY media code has been circulating for a while. Meritline has been guilty of shipping out substandard media before, that is why I won’t touch them. I have ordered Ritek G03/G04 discs from www.rima.com and www.newegg.com and never had a single issue. I do PS2, XBOX, Data and Movie backups.

I’ve successfully burned one dvd movie, I have yet to analyze the burned disc though.

How do you know the TY discs Meritline shipped out are fakes? or better yet how should I go about determining if they are genuine TY.

Jasian: my NEC 2500A burned at 4x, couldn’t do a 8x burn.

Definitely sounds like some fakes to me. :frowning:
Check my post HERE to determine TY authenticity.

Just recently I purchase 100 Genuine Ritek G05 8X DVD-R from Meritline.com, when the order was received, I put a disc in Dvdinfopro and Dvd indentifier, They both indentified the disc as TYG02, :a with the flood of phony Ty’s, I’m in process of returning the disc to meritline. Please check your disc when your received your orders.

Are you using a NEC 3500? Is this the MID before or after a burn? I ordered the same thing. Before I burn they say RITEKG05, after the burn they say TYG02. Strange, though given the information I have gleaned from the firmware forum the write strategy for the NEC 3500 firmware is TYG02 and maybe the drive is doing a fast one when the burn occurs.

Did you get the silver shiny, silver matte, or branded?

I am having similar results. I did not get the RITEKG05 with the label on the hub, I got the shiny ones. I ordered some that are matte and assume these will have the label on the hub. If you look at meritline.com’s website, they do not list a MID for the shiny ones.

I knew it was a gamble when I bought them. I had some RITEKG04 work so well I figured I would just get the RITEKG05 for more speed. They do not list the NEC 3500 on their list either which is my primary burner; tried firmwares 2.16, 2.F8, and 2.C7 . They do list a Plextor 708 & 712 though. Neither the NEC 3500, Plextor 708, nor Plextor 712 would successfully write this media.

I am hopeful a new firmware for my NEC 3500 will take care of this at some point. I would love to try one of Herrie’s firmwares, but the uniflash program will not work on my system, nor will tdb’s flasher flash one of Herrie’s beta’s (DOS version works great for tdb’s firmwares though). I suspect the reason I can not flash is related to my ASUS PC-DL Deluxe motherboard and my wanting to boot from a SATA drive; this requires me to disable the primary IDE controller. Maybe the recent BIOS will help, but have not taken the time to check into that. Excuse the rambling …

I recently bought 100 Pack Genuine Ritek G05 8X DVD-R (Silver Shiny) from meriline.com. I have an Optorite DD0203 (4X write, firmware v2.5) at home and a NEC 2500A (8X write, firmware v1.06? original not updated). Using DVDInfo Pro or KProbe, Optorite recognize it as RITEKG05 by Ritek. Strangely, NEC 2500A recognize it as TYG02 by Taiyo Yuden. How could it be?

I wouldn’t care if it works OK. Unfortunately, DVD made using Nero 6.3 on NEC 2500A has problems copying back to HD. First, Nero has problem closing it. It appears that it mounts fine. Copying the content back to HD would result in CRC errors on different files especially large files. I took it home and Optorite copies the content fine.

Any explanation on this strange phenomenon and how can I make NEC 2500A to write and read these DVD-R correctly?

Thanks,

cpliu

All I can tell you is update your firmware on your NEC and that may fix your issue. G05 may be too new for 1.06 but I am not sure.

No this is a problem with Meritline selling fake discs and switching around discs with different MID codes.
Merging with original thread.

Anyone that has ordered G05 discs, but they are appearing as TYG02, please post a link to the exact discs you ordered on meritline.
Also, please post media code block showing TYG02. thx…

It burns fine on Optorite DD0203 but at 2X instead of 4X Optorite is capable of. It burns at 8X on NEC 2500A but it fails to close it, although the DVD mounts fine.

Well they have a money back guarantee I would suggest anyone getting these should get their money back.

and those above are NOT Taiyo Yudens or Ritek G05s

We may need to get some Litigation…

So they’re neither Taiyo Yudens nor Ritek G05s. What are they? If I return, I lose the shipping and have to pay for the shipping to return. That’s $14 in itself. Of course, it’s better than keeping 100 problem discs or coasters for $44. Looks like I lose anyway. I will go for reputable venders than cheap price next time.

Yo-

Bottom Line - use a quality reseller - if you look on www.resellerratings.com and see the comments about Meritline (about 50-60% positive) - no reasonable person would buy from them - then again if you look up Rima (about 98% positive) you see why so many people recommend them on these boards (and NO - I don’t have any financial interest in Rima) it’s just that we want to guide people in the right direction so they can get the best for the best prices from the best vendors-

Happy Burnin’
