RitekG05 compatibility with DRU-700A/832S

I’ve been burning DVD home movie footage with a Sony DRU-700A (VY06E) using new RitekG05 disks at both 8x & 4x and most disks I’ve produced show instances of significant artifacting and the video then freezes when viewed on my TV’s DVD player (Toshiba). I had been using Maxmax (8x) and Princo (4x) blanks prior to this without any issues.

After creating a number of coasters, I decided to reflash the firmware to Liteon SOHW-832S (VS0B) to see whether that firmware had better compatibility with the Riteks. Unfortunately, the DVD player is still showing the same artifacting and the video then freezes. Defragging my drive (RAID 0) didn’t fix the problem either.

I’ve bought over 100 Riteks, believing them to be superior in quality to the Maxmax and Princo disks, so I’m very keen to make them work on my Sony/Liteon drive if I am able.

Of note, when looking closely at the burnt area on the Riteks only, the colour is not a uniform blue colour, but shows some ‘banding’. This is reduced somewhat when burning at 4x, but it is still visible. Maybe the die used in my batch of Riteks is dodgy?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Krypto

2 things…firstly have ya used omnipatcher with recommended tweaks as stock G05 write strat is known to be very bad…
secondly would be better if ya could give us a kprobe scan then we and you can see why it freezes…
but as a quick fix change the G05 write strat to G06…this is a recommended strat swap or ya can do it manualy but it is definetely better than stock G05 strat…if ya go to codekings page and download omnipatcher and VY06 unscrambled firmware and apply recommended tweaks and crossflashing and whichever other tweaks ya want and flash your drive you will get better results with G05…but liteons do prefer dvd+r…that being said i have had good results from G04 and G05…nowhere near as good as prodisc R02 + discs which are actualy £1 cheaper than G04 and G05 in UK

Many thanks Hetster. I followed your advice and omnipatched the VY06 unscrambled firmware back from Liteon 832S to DRU-700, changing the 05’s write strat to 06 and selecting the recommended tweaks. The results were quite stunning.

The first new burn still showed a little artifacting and did actually freeze in one spot but the second burn (this time at 6x) was fine. Maybe this will improve after a couple of ‘learning’ runs (if learning is actually true?)

These are some comparison kprobe scans, although I’m not yet familiar with interpreting the figures or knowing what levels of quality I should expect or aim for:

Anyway, thanks again for the advice - you’ve saved me some dollars. I’ll be interested in trying some +R media and comparing the results.

Cheers,

Krypto

learning is true usualy takes 3 or 4 burns before ya get an average of what future burns will be like…
but i’m glad its all worked out…thats the bad thing about ritek discs…you get it all set up perfect and get good quality burns then your next cake box of discs burn terrible…ritek is very variable. i would suggest this which worked for me…waste 1 dvd out of every new cakebox by burning a multisession dvd burn 4 1 gig files to fill the dvd and even though its 1 disc it has been burnt to 4 times which gets rid of the learning buffer from your last batch of ritek…you will find that ritek varies from pack to pack and in some cases disc to disc…i recently purchased some datasafe yellow top g04’s (25 pack) and after 8 discs from the same pack the changed from g04 to g05 lol… seemed a bit extreme but wasnt bothered as they burnt at 8x instead of 4x and the results where comparible to the G04’s…
anyway glad its all worked out ok in the end for ya…

Thanks again Hetster. But it looks like my luck with the Riteks was short lived. I’ve tried burning some more G05s but my kprobe scans were not good at all - even with patched firmware G05@G06. I haven’t yet tried to crossflash with patched & tweaked Liteon 832S firmware again to see if it makes a difference but I may.

These are the most recent scans of the RitekG05s (burnt at 6x & 4x), followed by a scan from a TDK TTG02, that burnt with a very low error rate:

As you can see, the TTG02’s performed significantly better - and that was from the first disk - without any learning etc.

Unless I can do something tricky to get the Riteks burning within spec, it looks like I’ll have to try for a refund and buy the more expensive TDK’s.

Cheers,

Krypto

there are a few other strat swaps you could try…these are known to work with G04 and G05…
MCC03, MBI 03RG30, MCC 02RG20, GSC003, MXL RG03
i used MBI 03RG30 myself and the results werent bad…cant say about the others though…it seems ech drive varies as well…1 832 will burn - very well while another not as well…
but theres a few others to try…just in case they wont take them back. a lot of stores now wont allow refunds on blanks especialy since ritek lost its quality control.

I´m sure MCC-02RG20 and MXL-RG03 are worth a try…
Happy hacking.

BTW, I hope the_hetster had -R´s in mind when he wrote “MCC03”.

Hi,

I got some ritek g05 few days ago and they are gone smooth…

I have got like you a sony dru-700a and I’m using cg3b (vs0b for -R).

I got quite good results using g06 in place then g05 strat.

I’ll post tomorow the results.

Don’t give-up try cg3b (I tryed even vy06 but didn’t work that well even for me).

Bye

TX again codeguys
