I was just wondering why Ritek R02 Media is only recorded at 2.4x speed on my NEC, and why NEC dosn’t release a new firmware to fix that problem. Does anybody else have the same problem? How can you fix that?

I have got the answer from NEC that they won’t release any new firmwares for the ND-1100A. It sucks because the number of media codes in the original 1.A0 firmware is very limited and for example “RITEK…R02” is missing which is the reason it will only burn in 2.4x.
I recommend that you flash your drive with HP’s dvd300n firmware version 3.10 where this media is included and works in 4x. A bonus is that you with this firmware also can change book type on DVD+RW media in Nero (it works in version 6.0.0.11 but maybe not in later versions). Anyway here is how you do it:

Download the flash tool and the 1.29 HP original firmware from http://etna.rpc1.org/nec/ and flash to this firmware.

Download the HP dvd300n 3.10 firmware from http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1598 and now update your firmware to this.

I wrote to nec europe support, and a german support engineer told me that he doesn’t know whether there will, or will not, or when will be, or if at all… there will ever be a new firmware released, but I suppose they won’t.
I think it really is a pitty how nec treats the “early adopters” of their 1100A drive which really did cost a lot compared to their new product. Let us all write to NEC that we will consider this behaviour next time we buy new hardware…
Anyway, I will tell you how the flashing went when I have managed to do it

I flashed my ND-1100A with the HP 3.10 firmware just a couple of days ago so I haven’t tested it so much yet. But I have burned a few DVD+R/RW’s and they have worked fine.
