I bought an external CDRW DVD combo drive 2 years ago, now i wonder if i can replace the combo drive with a new DVD-RW drive, Ive checked the chipset of the enclosure and it is NEC D720130 (http://www.necel.com/usb/en/product/upd720130.html) with 12/480 Mbps data rate.
Want to know if the new DVD-RW (such as sony 16x DWG120a dual layer) drive will be compatible or can achieve maximum performance or not.

Shouldn't be a problem to fit a new drive, so long as the new drive is the same size (within reason).
You will not likely ever achieve full performance because USB is terrible for burning. However, it should be okay for 8x DVD / 52x CD burning.
