I agree that while apple's popularity would go up if they let people install MAC on any computer they wanted their popularity would undoubtedly increase, it isn't difficult to see where their coming from. Right now if you want a laptop that is guarunteed ot have good, reliable, high-quality hardware and little or no crapware you have relatively few options, wich is where Apple comes in. By controlling their hardware, as coolios points out they do not have to worry about compatibility and therefor bugs, etc., meaning they can concentrate on making theirs really good. Also, if you buy Apple, you do not have to worry (as much) about wether you are getting a good quality machine as that's what Apple is known for. Their marketing scheme has it's advantages and disadvantages, and unfortunately for them one of those disadvantages is limiting how fast (or even how much) thier popularity can grow.
