The incidence of drive failure in DMR-ES15 models might occur if these machines are shut up in a cabinet without satisfactory ventilation. The DMR-ES15 does not have a cooling fan.
Panasonic DVD drives do not always have the part number and serial number stamped on their lids.
Is your DMR-ES15 a USA model?
I have found that DVD drives may usually be swapped between different models of the same year of manufacture. (The first number appearing in the serial number is the year of manufacture.)
My DMR-ES15 models were manufactured in 2006. I have swapped DVD drives between DMR-ES35V and DMR-ES15 models.
Other 2006 models include DMR-ES25, DMR-ES45V and DMR-ES46V.
You might look for a parts machine with problems unrelated to the DVD drive. These may sometimes be found on eBay. Of course, these machines are sold AS-IS.
Actually that’s pretty close to how i ended up with this box.
You see my brother was getting a lot of grief from his DMR-EX75,
and after cleaning everything I could, (using a few posts on here), I gave up.
Told him either buy another DVD drive or buy a new unit.
He decided to buy another unit, but as we were looking around we noticed a DMR-ES15EB (UK Model) ex display model (a few scratches and no remote), we took a chance on the DVD drive being compatible with his EX75.
After opening up the ES15, it looked identical to his old drive, swapped over the drives and everything worked perfectly.
Which leaves me now with a nearly new DMR-ES15EB unit minus a DVD drive and remote.
So yeah, I did think about looking at Ebay, but I’m assuming that a high majority of the units will have a problem with the DVD drive, as this is the most common area for faults.
Nevertheless, thanks for your input.
