Replacement drive

what will fit in an older dell computer(deminsion 2400)? would like to replace the original cd rom with a dvd writer but it seems that just any drive won’t fit. need help/advice…

Why exactly do you think that “just any drive” won’t fit? CD/DVD drives do vary a little bit on length, but on full sized drives, they are pretty much standard on width and height. Here are the instructions for this model: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/parts.htm The instructions for replacing the optical drive don’t seem to be out of the ordinary.

Your computer seems to be an older model that uses an IDE interface for the optical drives. You can still find IDE interface drives at online shops like Newegg. For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106281

maybe it’s me( i guess it is), but the panel for the drive seems a bit narrow.
bought the computer from a co-worker and thought it would be good enough to use for backups.
yes it does use IDE interface and i am shopping newegg right now for something to use. checked the link you provided and am confident in what you suggest. thanks again, Kerry, for being there.

I just finished retiring a fleet of Dell 2400’s and still have several around
(no longer in service), they take an IDE optical drive, nothing special
about them…

What exactly is your question?

you need to remove the case side and pop the clips to remove the front trim
to remove/install the drive from the chassis.

then after reinserting the drive into the metal chassis re-install the plastic face plate…

the drive will not go in or out with the front trim installed.

But the drawer functions fine.
