[qanda]This thread is about the Samsung DVD Recorder. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I have a Samsung SH-S203 (SATA) DVD writer that I removed from one of my computers after replacing it with a later Samsung model in that computer. The SH-S203 works fine but I want to move it to my other computer, a Dell XPS400. I have two DVD drives installed on that Dell package. One is a DVD ROM, the other is a DVD R/RW. Both Sony drives are connected on a parallel ata cable and are both on the "cable select" jumper. I want to replace the DVD ROM drive that is connected on the end of the parallel cable with my Samsung SH-S203 so as to have two DVD R/W drives with more functionality than the original Dell drives. If I can do this obviously I would then have ATA and SATA drives in the Dell (but I don't know if there would be any "conflict" with that mix).
I tried to install the Samsung in the drive slot used by the DVD ROM because there is no other place to install an internal drive, and of course I have the SATA power and data cables needed as well as extra SATA inputs on the MOBO. I left the end of the parallel cable hanging and did not change the jumper on the DVD R/W I left in. But upon booting back up there was nothing "found" and system started having problems, notably the keyboard stopped working. So I put the Sony DVD ROM back in and reset everything.
Obviously there are settings/procedures/bios that need to be done in order to replace the DVD ROM with the Samsung in this Dell. It's been years that I messed with this Dell so I need advice about the procedures if what I want to do is possible.
OS is XP media edition, SP2.
Help and advice would be appreciated.
