If your primary focus is to have an Optical Drive that will be able to effectively recognized and read the largest array of CD/DVD Media (not Media ‘Picky’) thrown at it a half high height Optical Drive is by far the preferred choice.
My suggestion is visiting the CD Freaks External Enclosure Forum (http://club.cdfreaks.com/f143) and do some research. A quality half high height Optical Drive installed in a quality External Enclosure will out perform any internal SlimLine Optical Drive.
It is not that difficult to install a half high height Optical Drive in an External Enclosure and the finished product will be far superior to any internal SlimLine Optical Drive. Also a half high height Optical Drive installed in a quality External Enclosure is far easier to maintain and repair than an internal LapTop SlimLine Optical Drive.
This is route I have gone with for my 3 College students because LapTop internal SlimLine Optical Drive are just too Media ‘Picky’ when important critical CD/DVD data is involved.
Also when archiving important critical CD/DVD data is involved I have also provided External Enclosure HardDrives for my 3 College students. They routinely backup their LapTop Computer HardDrives to their External Enclosure HardDrives to ensure that important critical data is not lost. On two occasions this has save their bacon with their LapTop Computer HardDrives failed. This is something that you might considerer. Trust me these LapTop computers do fail.
