Recommend External DVD+/-ROM

Hi, everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster…

I need to purchase an external DVD drive for a laptop, but I’ve been out of the loop for a while and I don’t know which model is best suited to my needs, which are as follows:

  • Must be able to be set as region-free or region toggle must be unlimited or resettable.
  • Must be external. Full size 5.25" or slim model? Is it better to buy the drive and enclosure separately or should I get them as a kit? I suppose this has to do with whether I can find a kit that comes with a drive that’s allows makes region resets easy.
  • Does not have to be a burner. It’s for watching movies, basically.

I’m not concerned with the host interface. Either USB 2.0 or FireWire are good by me, unless someone has some insight for me.

Thanks, folks, I’ll check back soon for your pearls of wisdom!

Have you considered buying an enclosure kit?

I would suggest so because you can take it towards future DVD-Rom upgrades, and you can get any regular DVD Rom you desire with all those options.

I suggest the Lite-on 166s check my rig for it.

durr… just read you did consider an enclosure kit… well then I suggest it, and I suggest FireWire because its more stable than USB2.0 and for loss of 80K/s transfer speed don’t think twice.

Thanks, man,

Are Lite-On drives easier to region-hack than others?
