Reading DVD\'s as blank CDs in XP but not Vista (NEC ND-3550A)

[qanda]This thread is about the NEC ND-3550A. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]I burned a data DVD-R and when I put it in the drive it shows up as blank CD in XP sp2.

The drive reads the dvd on the same computer on Vista and installs the software that on the DVD.

I took the drive out and put it in an external enclosure and tried it and it did not read the DVD. But as external in Vista on a different computer it read it.

I’ve tried the DVD in different dvd-roms on other computers and it does work.

It seems as if it’s not working in XP only. I’m using a fresh install with SP2.

One more thing I’ve noticed: The brand of this DVD media is Maxell and the drive will not read any other burnt maxell media, but it WILL read other branded burnt media. It use to read the Maxell fine, I’ve gone through a spindle of 50 and this problem just happened with 2 left.

Any ideas? If it were a bad drive it shouldn’t work in any OS, right?
