Read Errors with NEC ND-2510A + TDK DVD+R

Media: TDK DVD+R x8 Fullface-printable
DVD-burner: NEC ND-2510A
Nero Version: 6.6.0.14

I was going to backup my flac collection and when Nero started verifying I got a bunch of errors. I think I’ve been able to burn without errors before but I’m not sure if I’ve verifyed. I tried to burn a DVD movie with DVD Decrypter (same media) but I got an error with that too. The movie was at 8x and when I tried to backup the flacs I lowered the speed to 6x. I haven’t changed firmware or anything like that and didn’t have any other programs running in the background. Anyone know what might be wrong and how/if I can do anything to fix it? I’m not sure what else you need to know so just if there’s anything I forgot so say.

Here’s the beginning of the log from Nero (the whole thing is pretty long and I stopped it after less than 25%):

Hi and be welcome aboard!

Hmm that’s no good! What’s the exact media you are using (rated speed)? Can you perhaps tell us what kind of media it is, by extracting the MID from the disc? You can use DVD Identifier (http://dvdidentifier.cdfreaks.com) for that matter.

Also, you might want to try several other devices if they can read those media. It’s not a good thing your burner can’t read those media, but the 2510 isn’t exactly the best reader on the planet (it’s

Also, updating the writer’s firmware could do good!

I gave up verifying with Nero & DVD Decrypter as my XP system was not refreshing it’s view of the DVD & giving me false results.
I then tried CD Check to compare the video files on my HDD to the DVD & generally found it matched them.
Before you think your burner has a problem get Cd Check, Windiff (from Microsoft) or Beyond Compare & do some after burn comparisons once you’ve ejected & reloaded the DVD.
I did actually have these problems with my NEC2500, coincidence or what?

Hi, and thanks! This is what I get with DVD Identifier:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:TDK-002-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [TDK Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [TDK]
Media Type ID : [002]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried the to watch the movie on another DVD-player and it went ok, there were some weird things in the middle of the movie but I was able to watch it anyway. Now I tried playing the songs from the second DVD on another computer and got the same problem as here. I can play some songs but not all, so obviously there were errors while burning.

Junk media. Looks to me like fake TY’s. Try a known quality media and see how it behaves. Just for kicks try downloading www.dvdinfopro.com and run it under this program and post.

Does this mean I just bought 300 coasters?

Maybe but before you go and get all bent outa shape, run a test with Nero in Nero Tools. Do a create data disc at 8X and then a disc quality test again at 8X and post. This will be the final proof.

Also, should I creating data disc should I just burn anything on it? (I’m guessing yes)

#11

By create data disc it does it all for you. Just set your speed to 8X and click create data disc. When done with this just click over to disc qual test and do it again making sure to set the speed to 8X again.

#12

I can’t find “create data disc” anywhere though.
You’re not talking about

Nero StartSmart -> Data -> Make Data DVD

are you?
I’m guessing it’s something in

Nero StartSmart -> Extras

?

#13

No No No it’s in Nero Tool Kit. Click Nero Tool kit and then CD DVD Speed which then will look like this.

#14

I only have:

CD-DVD Speed
DriveSpeed
InfoTool

there, and it doesn’t seem to be in any of them.

#15

Click on file, and then options in Nero CD DVD Speed. This is where you can set your drive speeds for the create data. After that click on run tests. There you have a bunch of options of different tests, The last one being create data.

#16

Hey abuse… Did you get it yet? I have to hit the sack soon here.

Benchmark

Scandisk, this one got really slow as soon as the dots started getting red so I stopped it when I started falling asleep.

I can’t run the Disc Quality test, I get “Error initializing test”.

#18

Forget about scan disk. That isn’t what you want. Open Nero CD DVD Speed and click on file. Then click on options. Then click on Standard tests. Here is where you set the read and write speded of the test. then click OK. Now leave the main page in Bench Mark and go above and click on Run test. Go down to the bottom of this page and it says CREATE DATA DISC and click on this. Now your on your way. Once this is done you can go to the Disc Quality tab. Click on this and make sure that it is set to 8X then click Start. This is all there is to doing it. I can’t give you any more info on how to do it as I’ve given it all to you. Just play around with it from here and I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it. Just keep in mind that when you creat a data disc, if it’s a + or -R disc, you’ll only be able to do this once per disc. Post the create data test and Disc Quality test. Good Luck.

Mark

#19

Ok, I updated the firmware from 2.15 to 2.18 now and it went just fine.

I created the data disc:

And I clicked the Disc Quality tab:

But, when I press Start it gives me a message saying “Error initializing test.”

#20

Try closing out the program after you do the create data. Then re-open it fresh and start at Quality test.
