I was cleaning out my closet the other day and I found a couple hund of the old MXLGR-03 Gold Top Maxell discs, and guess what, they still work. I also found some TDK 4X discs and they dont, they were the 30 packs that were in the box with Plextor 740A drives. I bought 10 of those and just threw the discs in the back of my parts closet. They were still in the box and not at all damaged, the just dont work anymore after 5 years.
Why don't they work? Will they cause a power calibration error or aren't the discs recognised at all?
I've been using lots of vintage CD-R and DVD+/-R without any problems…
Yeah, I have a few old 4x DVD-/+Rs in my stash, various MIDs...as Max says, what happened Alan?
Burn failures, bad scans/TRTs, skips....?
I'm not at all surprised that the "vintage" Maxell discs still work. They were, and no doubt still are, a very reliable disc.
In fact I've been using up some Ritek 12x CD-R and these work without any problems. (While my LiteOn LH-18A1H is not particularly fond of them, some older burners do like them.)
