I too like you tend to use SP for programs between ~1:50 and 2hrs instead of FR, thinking that maybe the fixed speed of SP might be better, but it’s always in the back of my mind that maybe I’d be better off with FR instead.
For some time I had a somewhat related concern.
I would often record between four and six hours of black and white programming, usually between two and four titles per disc. Often the last title would be FR to fit/fill the disc.
Occasionally, back in 2006 or early 2007, I would burn a copy of such a disc on a computer’s DVD burner. Usually there were no problems with the “normal speed” titles on copied discs. But now and then the last FR title might play for awhile but then the picture might freeze up or skip and then stop playing.
I postulated that my computer DVD burners or the burning software (Roxio 8 and 9 Suites) had no problem copying the “normal speeds” but may have been confounded with the variations found in a FR recording. Another thought I had was related to blank media. During that time I sometimes used Memorex media. In the spring of 2007 I began having many failures with Memorex media. I discarded the remaining Mexorex media and kept using TDK, Maxell and Verbatim which, at the time, performed well without problems.
Since that time I have used FR without further complications on copied discs.
In recent months I’ve made only a few copies of my home-recorded DVDs.
