Quality of burned disk

i have a few questions about burning DVD-R disks.

if my processor is relatively slow (which it is) and the buffer keeps on emptying (which, with old drives would cause buffer underrun errors) , how does this affect the quality of the burned disk?

also, i heard that some media didn’t like to be written on at too SLOW a speed, meaning that i would have to write it faster for better results, resulting in more buffer emptying (and a worse quality disk?).

which is the lesser of the 2 evils? writing the media slower than it likes, or having the buffer empty all the time?

i’m not running loads of things, in the system tray, or anywhere, at the same time as burning, or affected by spyware, in case anyone is wondering, just got a slow <1gHz processor.

i used to be able to write perfectly fine working films, that were good in numerous players, but now they start to skip at some point in even the best player that i have - is the drive itself past it?

Welcome to CD Freaks Tom.

You should be able to burn happily at 8x at least with older systems so I’d look into why you’re getting the buffer fluctuations.

The burner should/must be on a separate IDE channel from the source (HDD) and the HDD should be regularly defragged. Both these are very significant factors.

Also best to make sure you’ve got 80wire IDE cables for both channels and that all devices are in the correct DMA mode. So HDDs should UDMA mode 4, 5 or 6 and burners in mode 2 or 4.

As for the skipping etc , this is indicative of poor quality burns often because of the use of cheap media. Can you tell us what burner you have & what media you currently use.

The drive’s buffer underrun protection will usually prevent a complete
failure, but a large number of underruns can degrade the quality of the
burn.

I don’t think that you can burn a disc too slow. Stand-alone DVD recorders
do a decent job of burning high speed DVDs at 1x. The real problem is
that many drives don’t have a good slow speed write strategy for some
types of media.

You shouldn’t have to make that compromise when you have a
1GHz CPU. I use an old Athlon 850MHz PC (1999/2000) and
a BenQ DW1640 to burn DVDs at 12x. I think it can just about
manage 16x if I keep my hands in my pockets.

Is DMA enabled for your DVD burner and hard-drive?

Don’t use on-the-fly burning. Use an image file to keep
disk throughput and CPU usage to a minimum

Try doing a test burn using the Create Disc tab in CD-DVD Speed
and post the results here.

cheers for the replies, i’ll have to look at some things and post more when i get home.

the pc i’m using is an Athlon - i think it is overclocked to 893 mHz from 750, but i can’t remember the exact numbers - i think these are wrong.

i remember having dvd and cd burning errors when it was overclocked too high, so this may be my problem now, come to think of it, though it had been fine for over a year at this speed.

the drives are each on their own ide, not sharing with anything.

i’ve not defragged since 2 computers ago, about 1999 though. :slight_smile: (oops)

is there some sort of software way of telling whether the ide leads are 80wire?
i’m assuming nero will have some sort of way of telling me about the dma modes, but i’m using windows xp, so they should be right anyway, at least i thought so. i’ll have a look.

the dvd drive is an old one, 4x max, i’ll find out which one. the media is tesco branded, i’ll find out who made it.

when burning on your 1gHz at 12x, does the buffer on nero stay nearly full all the time? on mine, it dips right down to zero when burning above 1x (i think that the drive buffer stays full, though - there are 2 different buffer meters and a disc completion meter on nero - am i understanding which shows what properly?)

maybe my problems are not making an image file first and having a fragmented HDD.

Good thinking. You can save a Nero log. It will show the DMA settings.
Don’t assume that DMA will ‘just work’ with XP. Check the settings.

It is getting harder to get good results with very old drives.
They don’t have proper support for the latest media. Are
those Tesco +R 8x DVDs? They aren’t too bad, much better
than crappy Tesco CD-R.

I do my burning with K3B on Linux so I can’t answer your
question right now. I will try to burn one of those Tesco
DVD +Rs on the old Athlon later tonight.

On-the-fly is likely to cause problems.

the tesco discs are DVD-R - one of our DVD players doesn’t like +R’s - it’s too old, and i don’t believe i can try that bitsetting thing with my drive, can i? (i think that my dvd writer is a MICROSTAR DR4-A firmware 2.60)

i opened up the case to find a 40 wire ide lead on the dvd writer though… i’ll have to get an 80 lead one when i get

chance, in case this is an issue.

after changing everything that i can right now, i tried burning from vobs on a defragmented HDD (all HDDs have been

defragmented), and cpu usage never went above about 50%!!! must have been the DMA, i think. however, data

verification failed… i might have just been unlucky.

the film that i tried before changing anything in the pc verified correctly though - but it still started to jump about 45

minutes into the film. does this mean that the error correction was able to rebuild the data accurately, even though the

disc was very badly written??? it always confused me when something verified correctly, then was really jumpy

when played back.

They are the same.

I don’t know anything about the Tesco -R. I agree with TimC, you would
probably get better results with good quality media. Verbatim media
is now about the same price as the Tesco discs.

These are High Street prices. You can get it even cheaper
from specialist suppliers and on-line shops.

That explains the 1x burning speed.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that. That old drive probably doesn’t
support UDMA4 anyway. Use an 80 wire cable for the HDD, a
40 wire cable should be ok for [U]this[/U] DVD burner.

There is more to burning a video DVD than burning a
collection of VOB files to the disc. If your DVD burning
software has to do the DVD authoring process while
you are burning, this could cause problems. Have you
got an option to create an image of the DVD and save
it to disc?

Try burning a disc with CD-DVD Speed. As you can see
from my example above, this will give you detailed information
about burn speed, buffer level, CPU usage…

I wonder if CD-DVD Speed does quality scanning with this
drive? I found a review on the web which confirms that the
drive is limited to UDMA2 so the 40 wire cable should be ok.

Edit: Final comment. Finding suitable media for this old drive
is going to be a PITA. Perhaps the time has come to consider
buying a newer drive?

why so much trouble with DVD media compared to CD? will HD DVD/Blu Ray be even worse? i expect so…

any ideas why the fellow in the shop would ask what kind of device the 80 wire IDE was for? he had different ones for different devices!?!..

oh, and i didn’t realise that burning VOB and IFO and BUP files (using the DVD Video option in Nero) was a lot of work for the computer to do. I’ll try out CD-DVD Speed.

Most probably yes, because your old 4x DVD burner doesn’t have proper write strategies for newer 16x and 8x media.

That is an interesting question. I’m not really in a position to answer
it. I find recordable DVDs are quite reliable if I use good quality
media. CD-R can cause problems too. I have found that Tesco
branded CD-R are of very poor quality. HD DVD and
Blu-ray are way out of my price range :sad:

If you also have IFO, BUP etc, It seems the DVD authoring has
already been done and maybe this won’t be a problem.

Once a drive is more than 1-2 years old, the manufacturers tend to
stop producing firmware updates for it. Like Drage says, this means
that they won’t have proper support for the latest media. You can still
get 4x media, but it is not so easy to find and it is usually more
expensive than new 16x media. Now that the price of a new drive
is not much more than a single spindle of discs, it is usually cheaper
to just buy a new drive. Then you need a new PC that is
fast enough to work properly with it, a bigger hard-drive,
more memory. Then you find that the new PC doesn’t have
any IDE connectors so you need yet another new drive…

Everybody has their own opinion about which is the best
or worst drive. My Liteon LH-20A1P is the best drive I
have ever used. It is quiet and reliable and produces
excellent quality burns on DVD and CD recordable media.
My Liteon LH-18A1P is also a very good burner, but it
is very noisy. This seems to be a common problem with
recent Liteon drives. Liteon drives have good support for
quality scanning with CD-DVD Speed and Kprobe.

Pioneer, Samsung and LG also make some very good
drives. See the CD Freaks reviews for details.

On-line shops are selling some of the above drives
for around £25. Shipping costs might increase the
price by a few quid.

My friend in the UK just bought one of these. He finds
it quiet and reliable, just like mine.
