Hello Hello,

I currently have a 8800GTX in my box which is still working strong. A friend gave me a FX-1800 Quadro card. I checked prices and this is a $400 card.

I know it’s a workstation card but can it play games better than my 8800GTX. If not my son has a 8800GT in his I will replace that and keep my card.

My friend is an Engr and his office just replaced 30 of these with some 5800 cards. These 5800 wont even fit in my case they are about two feet long.

Thanks

I’m sorry to say this, but the Quadro FX 1800 is actually a weaker GPU than an 8800 GTX. The FX 1800 is basically a 9600 GS, which in turn is noticeably below the 9800 GT (which in turn is a renamed, slightly-higher-clocked 8800 GT). The 8800 GTX has 128 CUDA cores and a 384-bit memory bus (however, it is one of the earliest CUDA GPUs on the market due to its use of the G80 chip) - while the FX 1800 is based on the G94 chip that has only 64 CUDA cores (and most FX 1800s have only a 192-bit memory bus).

Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention that the FX 1800 is weaker than even your son’s 8800 GT, let alone your 8800 GTX. This is because the 8800 GT has 112 CUDA cores and a 256-bit memory bus. The FX 1800, as I mentioned earlier, has only 64 CUDA cores and a 192-bit memory bus.

woops I made a mistake,

My son’s computer had an 8600 GT in it. Me being the old dumb A$$ I am did not even think about an old program called 3dmark06.

His 8600GT around 5500
THe FX1800 Around 8400
My 8800GTX 12480

So the FX1800 was a step up for free. I would not pay $400 for this card he is playing Bioshock on it now and loving it.

Thanks

Oh, that does make sense. Your son actually got upgraded from an 8600 to a 9600 series GPU for nuthin’.
