I am interested to know how many of us are overclocking their CPUs and what motherboard and CPU you are using. I think this subject comes up about every few months but with the advent of new technology and advanced BIOS options I thought I would give it a go. These are my specs:
Intel Q9550 CPU - Stock 2.83GHz
Gigabyte GA X48 DS5 Motherboard
Corsair 620W PSU Modular
8 gbs of GSkill PC 8500 DDR2 1066 RAM
Artic Freezer Pro 7 cooler
Sapphire HD4850 Graphics 512mbs.
Tools used to test
Everest V4.50 Trial V (no Benchmarks)
To start I went in to the BIOS and on the Gigabyte Board they have a section called the Intelligent Tweaker in the BIOS.
First I ran a test with Prime 95 for 17 minutes at stock, this program is free. It ran 4 passes and was fine. This programs runs your CPU at a full load until it thinks its stable.
Then I looked at my temps with Everest. Also checked my CPU with CPUZ. All these programs I used are free.
I decided to push it. I Overclocked it to 3.4GHz with the settings in the Intelligent Tweaker. I had help with this so dont feel as if you are getting lost here. I did. LOL.
Below I will post my results. I would love to hear about other who have done this and what their opinions are and what you have achieved with your CPU and motherboard. Let me be clear, I am not a gamer I wanted to see what this could add to my trancoding times and what softwares could utilize it.
IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS PLEASE KNOW THERE IS RISK
These screenshots are after a 20% Overclock to 3.4GHz.
