PX-760A Will not run dual burn in reasonable time

Using Nero 7.0.8.2 burning from the hard drive two at a time. Each burner is on a different IDE bus as a slave. Media is Verbatim MCC 04 (16X+R). The same setup with the PX-716A was about a 7 minute burn. With the PX-760A it’s 1 hour and ten minutes. Buffer problem? Firmware problem? (FW 1.01 on the 760)

Im not to impressed with this new drive and I am still testing it but you should be getting better results then that do you have a log of the burns to look at to see what your issue might be? Im running the same drive and getting better results I will wait for another firmware update before I make a final judgement on this drive here is a copy of my log I switched to dvd- using sony media 16x write which is coming up as ty003

Too disgusted to save my log…Your log did not indicate a dual burn (2 DVD’s at one time)
A single burn for me goes 5:35 to 5:40 on a full disk.

#4

That HAS to be a DMA problem.

#5

Some hdds don’t support burning 2 discs at a time. I have 4 hard drives (2x 74gb Raptor, 250gb hitachi, 500gb hitachi) Whenever I burn 2 DVDs from either of the hitachi’s I get a buffer problem because the hdds read speed cannot match the read speed of 2 DVDs being burned at the same time. However on my RAID0 drive I can do a dual 16x DVD burn without a problem because in RAID0 it supports faster read speeds than in a single drive setup.

#6

Ran the dual burns off a sata raid drive. Had no problems with the PX-716A’s on sata or ide drives.
Plextools says all dma enabled.

#7

7 minutes on PX-716A is probably 12x, might be 16x but slowdowns at the end of the burn (WOPC too sensitive).

If you want to see how your drives and system perform on simultaneous burns, burn two images on your two 760A with Nero CD-DVD Speed at the same time. In Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.50, click the Create Disc tab and tick the “Burn image” option and click Start. After the burns, save both graphs by clicking the small disc icon on the top right of the window. Do the same for your 716A. Post all 4 graphs here (2 for 760 and 2 for 716).

#8

Zevia…I know how they perform. That’s the problem I’m trying to solve.
The PX-760A takes over one hour longer on a dual burn than the PX-716A.
Every thing is setup the same except for the different drives.

#9

pjskeet: does the data also comes from different channels, so you have two Plextors and two HDDs and they are in four different channels?

Both PX-716A and PX-760A are capable of UDMA4 data transfer, did you check them?

It is also recommended to put your plextor drive in Master as per manual.

Lastly, when you’re simultaneously burning on PX-716A do you know whether both burners burn with the same speed, same max speed and finished the same time? How about with both PX-760A? Using my recommendation in post#7 above you would be able to produce graphs that could show how your drives and system perform in simultaneous burns.

Alternatively, you can try to burn simultaneously at 8x and get around 8 minutes.

#10

Zevia…I’m burning one file from one HDD to multiple (2) burners simultaneously using Nero multiple burner option. I will switch to master on both drives as a possible solution.

#11

I had 2 burners. Pioneer A107 and NEC 3500. I couldn’t copy DVD with more then 6x speed. I stopped to worry about it. Later I changer Pionerr drive with Liteon. I kept same settings, nothing has changed. I just switched from one drive to another. After that I could burn copy DVD with 16x speed.

Once again. i didn’t change anything. Just connected new drive.

I don’t want to say you have same trouble. It’s just one experience which is maybe good to be told.

#12

I switched both drives to master on each bus. Same result. No improvement. Anyone else have any brilliant ideas?

#13

If this worked with the 716A and not working with 760A then it could be a problem with 1) Nero or 2) 760A.

Are you using SP1 or SP2? SP1 had a problem with atapi drives going to PIO after erroring a number of times but this problem was fixed in SP2 and a hotfix was made for SP1 users.

While burning check device manager and make sure it’s running in DMA mode

Where you using the same Nero version with the 716A as you were with the 760A?

I’m still using version 6.6.0.16 and I can run 2 burners (760A & 716A) off ONE RAID0 drive perfectly fine.

Personal opinion: With software if it ain’t broke don’t fix/upgrade it.

#14

gOdisOnyOuRsIDe…DMA is not displayed in my device manager. Everything is the same with the 760 as with 716 with the possible exception of the version of Nero. I checked the drives in Plextools XL and both drives have DMA enabled. So as you say…It could be Nero or the 760 or some other unknown problem. Run as a single burn either 760 drive is 30 to 40 seconds faster than anything else I have. That’s real world numbers.

#15

What features attract you in Nero7 that Nero6 doesn’t have? If you upgraded to Nero7 because it is the newest version of Nero then trying doing a clean uninstall of Nero7 and install Nero6. For me Nero6 is all I need at the moment and what speed where you burning at with both drives?

#16

If I knew where to find an earlier copy of Nero I’d try it. I tried burning at 8-12 and 16X. In the morning I’m going to switch my 716’s in and see if the 760 was the problem.

#17

lost most control of my fingers so pleaqe bear with me, it hurts like hell 2 type.

wow thats a looong time. im very satisfied with my px-760a i ca burmn verbatim dl media in about 22 nmins at 8x and the burn is good!!!
i purchased previously (all DVD+R DL) verbatim 2.4x media, 2.4x - 6x certified media and 2.4 - 8 meda but this is the firstwriter that actually burned at that speeed and the brun was good, zero errors. as i was saying abou 22 mins to burn and a little less to verify. theres even a 6x burn speed 4 verbatim DL media - first time iver ever saw that and i have 5 current dvd writers). i multitslk while burning ripping, unzipping, tons of stuff with no problemm while burning what so ever. i have as of yet tred a 10x vurn.
imm using the laatest version of nero 6 withlight scribe (onr burner has litewscribe)

the 760 is a muthaa, at lesst 4 me and dvd+r Dl media

#18

I swapped out the PX-760A’s with PX-716A’s and I’m getting the dual burns off of one drive as I have in the past. Anyone know of any features in the 760 not in the 716 that could cause this?

#19

buffer size (716=8MB, 760=2MB) but i don’t see how that would cause this problem…

#20

drpino…I just realized the same thing. I got short changed on buffer in the 760’s. Tech support said that’s probably the problem. They’re going to do some testing and let me know.

Incidently on media…Yuden02 comes up as 16x on the 716 and 12x on the 760.
