PX-740A can't burn Dual Layer disks (sense-key error)

I have a Plextor PX-740A that has worked well for every task except burning DL DVDs. After eight DL coasters and no successes over a period of weeks I’m pissed off. The problem occurs with Nero and with Alcohol, but I finally took a closer look at the error log from Nero and the write error seems to be happening on the layer switch.

I’m using Memorex DL 2.4x media and am burning at 2.4x. Here’s the error log from Nero:

Well i’ve a sucessfull rate of dvd+dl memorex, is 7 out of 10. (plextor 760A)
Try burning a dvd+dl from verbatim, i doubt u’ll have any problem.

#3

I have the extact same error message when trying to burn a dual layer disk. I am using the same media (Memorex DL+R 8x max burn) i tried 8x burn, 2.4x burn with the same error message. So far i’ve cooked 3 coasters at about $1.65 a pop. I tried updating my ASPI using forceaspi. Same error message.

My next attempt will be installing the latest nero 9.0.9.4 and trying it again. Will be sure to post results here.

It sure would be nice to have this situation resolved by someone who knows what they’re doing.

By the way, my personal feeling on blank media is that verbatim media is junk and yeilded many coasters when i tried their product about 5 years ago.
My greatest sucesses and in my opinion the best blank media is #1 Memorex, and #2 Maxell.

I use a Pioneer DVR-110D burner.

#4

You got to be kidding! Memorex NEVER made their own media, they only rebadge media. Old Maxell MIJ media were very good to excellent, unfortunately, they don’t make media anymore and like Memorex, just rebadge.

Use DVD identifier to post the MID of your “#1” DVD+R9 8x and let’s see what other people say. Do you even know IF your 110D support this “#1” media?

@flibbidyfloo

Your burner has BenQ1640 Hardware the only actual DL this burner knows are Verbatim 2,4x DVD+R DL, thats the problem. Your special problem with Plextor firmware is further that this is much older than the last BenQ 1640 firmware BSRB, which is better suited for DL burning. So you might think about a crossflash if DL burning is important.

#6

I’m sorry i made a mistake on the model of the burner. I actually have a DVR-111D Pioneer, with the latest firmware.

I don’t know if my burner differentiates between media brands, but it is supposed to be a DVD + / - RW + / - and DL + / - compatible burner.
