PX-716A no longer reads DVD data discs

My 716A recently stopped reading DVD data discs and blinks green 5 times.
It has no problem reading any type of CD and DVD movies work fine too.
I’ve tried updating my firmware to 1.11 and changed the IDE driver from NVidia to Windows and so far no luck.
RMA is out as my drive is over 2 years old but doesn’t get heavy use.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Run the self test with recommended media. Check the Plextor web site for instructions in FAQ or manual download.

Could be a issue with LED lens or cabling. Since it is out of warranty may try removing the case and reseating cables. Give the optics assy a GENTLE wipe with an alcohol wipe.

Blink codes are explained here:

Here’s how to do the self-test:

Sometimes some lens and flat-ribbon-cable-connector cleaning has revived drives. For self-repair ideas:

Good luck!

I’ll try these and see what happens. Hopefully, I’ll have good news to report back.

Here’s what happened so far. I tried removing and reconnecting the 3 ribbon cables in the drive as well as cleaning the lens and so far no changes. I tried to find out why some DVD’s would work and others wouldn’t and this is what I noticed.

The drive can read DVD-R, DVD+RW
DVD+R gives me 5 green blinks
DVD+R DL gives a continuous amber light

Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
