From the FAQ:

Q: My Plextor drive is performing very slowly. When burning it’s continuously going into BURN-Proof mode.
A: The problem is that the drive is using the PIO Mode instead of UDMA mode. DMA must be enabled and working properly in order to achieve a smooth operation. Check this thread for info on how to enable DMA in Windows XP, 2000, Me and 9x.

#3

but i only get ultra mode 2 to and i have an 80pin cable i checked all the possiblities what do i do?

#4

UDMA 2 is plenty fast enough for 16x burning. Grios you mentioned encoding; you’re burning DVD-video?

#5

grios, could you download and run PXInfo and post your results in this thread?

#6

yes i am burning a dvd video i used plextool and it would go more than 2.75x burning a dvd with recommended media

here’s my results

If you don’t mind wasting a blank disc, open Nero CD-DVD Speed and use the create data disc function (F9) and after it’s done save the transfer rate graph as a .PNG file by clicking the floppy disc icon at the top right and post the image here on the forum.

I see you have another device installed (ATAPI CD-ROM) on the same IDE channel as your Plextor. This can sometimes cause problems. Try running your Plextor as a single device as Master (of course) and see if that fixes your problem. Also check the DMA settings on your hard disk(s). Have you tried any other software for burning your DVD’s? Let us know!

#9

DMA for hard drive, I often forget about that. That indeed can sometimes be the culprit.

#10

so i disconnect my cd rom??

#11

Remove it completely yes. In the manual that came with your drive you can probably find some info that states that it’s recommended to use your drive as single device on the Secondary IDE channel. Another device on the same channel can cause problems with the Plextor’s UDMA mode, especially when that other device does not support UDMA. Remember to also check the DMA properties of your hard disk(s)!

#12

how do i check my dma settings for my hardrive?

#13

The same way as you check them for your Plextor burner. Go to your Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager > IDE/ATAPI Controllers > Primary IDE Channel. But sometimes, when you have installed the Intel Application Accelerator drivers the IDE properties are not available.

#14

oh mine is ultra mode 5

#15

this is how mi stuff looks after i disconnect cd rom now it doesnt even have ultra mode 2 do you think the prob could be because i never unistalled my hp dvd writer 300n i just removed and replaced with the plextor

#16

Show us the Advanced Settings of your Secondary IDE Channel please since this is the channel to which your Plextor is connected to

#17

i think i dit its encoding in 15min now!!! thanx for the help you guys are awesome

#18

Haha I Did It 15 Min Because It Was A 2 Gig Dvd But Over All It Encodes Alot Faster…but There Was One More Question Is There Anyway To Improve Like Not To Take As Long As 45min To Encode A 4.7gig Dvd

#19

Encoding is not a function of the drive. Thats a function of your CPU type and speed mostly. Upgrade to the fastest CPU you can get - Intel P4’s are best for video encoding.

Another quick related question:

I have the 716A hooked up as “master” and a TDK VeloCD on the slave. Would removing the TDK benefit things? I like to use it for fast CD burning.

My analyzing/encoded takes an enormous amount of time as well. I’m fairly certain it’s because my processor is the bottleneck, only 900mhz Athlon. I do have gobs of RAM and XP, though.

Any other tips for speeding things up? Simple single-layer discs are a snap to duplicate quick.
