Recently bought a PX-712A and installed it in a Shuttle XPC (SS51G V1.0) with a SIS 651 chipset.

Equipment:
MB: SS51G V1.0
RAMs: 512 MB Corsair DDR 2100 RAM (1 stick)
HD: 60 G IDE IBM 7,200 rpm; Primary Master.
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Video: Built-In
PX-712A: Firmware 1.05, Secondary Master, DMA enabled. No secondary slave attached.

Problem:
Installed drive. Installed Roxio Easy CD & DVD Suite 6. Installed PlexTools V. 2.19a. Using Roxio Creator Classic 6.2.0.123 to burn a DVD data disk. Burn process starts for about 5 seconds and hangs. Roxio hangs also. Using PlexTools CD/DVD-ROM Maker to burn a DVD data disk. Burn process starts for a few more seconds then hangs. Ctrl+Alt+Del to close PlexTools. Used latest Nero (6.6.0.6) and same problem. Tried various brands of media: Verbatim 8X DVD+R, Memorex 8X DVD-R, as well as Fujifilm CD-Rs with similar results. Burn process begins for 5 to 10 seconds then hangs. The drive reads DVD-ROMs and DVD movies with no problem.

Request:
Anyone with a similar experience? The original PX-712A was RMA to Plextor with an identical problem. Plextor tech support thought is was a drive problem. The replacement PX-712A is doing the same thing. The self-diagnostic test passed. I am beginning to think it might be a chipset or chipset driver problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Bump!

Anyone using the PX-712A with a SIS-based chipset?

try updating your SIS chipset drivers…also it could be a software conflict having NERO & ROXIO installed on your pc…try uninstalling ROXIO…then uninstall NERO…use the NERO CLEAN TOOL …you can download it from NERO site…or if you are comfortable in using REGEDIT delete any NERO registry entries…reboot the pc…then reinstall NERO…

DVD_ADDICT, thanks for the suggestions. Will see if I can update the SIS chipset drivers… I have performed a clean uninstall of Nero and will also uninstall Roxio and PlexTools also. I plan to install only PlexTools first and see if things change after the SIS chipset driver update.

The updated SiS IDE drivers did the trick. For those who are interested, the driver version was 2.04a and is available from the following link:

Also did a general search for other people using SiS 651 chipset with burner problems and found this helpful link in the NEC forum.
