I have been a lurker for a while and now I come to you a recent issue I am having with my DVD-RW drive. Here is a copy of the letter I sent to Plextor's Technical Support:
"I am hoping that someone might have a suggestion for me with an issue I am currently having with my Plextor PX-708A drive.
Here is my current setup:
AMD Athlon64 3800+
Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra 939 motherboard
2GB of DDR SDRAM
2000GB SATA HDD on SATA Connector 0
300GB SATA HDD on SATA Connector 1
120GB ATA/133 HDD on IDE 0 (Master)
PX708-A on IDE 1 (Master)
Geforce 6800 Ultra 256MB of VRAM
I have all my chipset, video/soundcard drivers up to date and the PX-708A has the latest firmware (1.11). The Plextor drive is located on the secondary IDE connector by itself and is connected to the Master IDE connector on the IDE cable. Here is my problem which has never happened to me since owning this or any Plextor drive.
Whenever I insert a DVD+RW (Memorax brand) or a DVD+R (TDK brand), the DVD disc (regardless of which one of the two just mentioned) gets recognized as a CD disk. Windows recognized my drive as a DVD-RW drive (when viewed in "My Computer"). The BIOS, upon boot up, recognizes the drive correctly. So, without any disc in the drive, Windows labels the drive as "DVD-RW (G: )." But as soon as I insert one of the 2 DVD discs mentioned, it automatically converts to a CD Drive (G: ).
First, I thought it was a problem with some virtual drive software so I uninstalled that. It did not help. I also have AnyDVD from Slysoft which is a driver-level program to remove copy protection from DVD's so I can backup my kids' movies which I removed as well. That did not help either. I did a virus scan, spyware/malware scan, and a trojan scan and all the scans came up clean. I eventually decided to an image restore I had of the system from about a month ago and that did not help either.
Upon re-imaging, the drive gets recognized as "PX-708A DVD-RW" and then gets listed under the "CD Drive" heading in the Device Manger. No yellow exclamation marks or yellow question marks. Under the drive properties, it is listed as working properly and everything looks good. It's just when I load one of the 2 types of disks mentioned earlier that it does not recognize the disk as a DVD disk and Windows then labels the drive as a CD drive in "My Computer's" window. I also thought it might be a media incompatability issue since the 2 disks are not on Plextor's supported media list. But I have used these disks many, many times without issues until now.
I just got off the phone with tech support and he told me about the self test for the drive. I will give that a shot when I get home to see if the drive is failing. This drive has been a workhorse for me and I have never had an issue with either of the Plextor drives I have owned up until this point. I am thinking I might just format my hard drive and see if that clears it up since I can re-image if necessary. I just don't know what would cause this issue.
Any help would be appreciated."
I am hoping someone here might have some suggestion before I take the plunge and do a complete format and reinstall of windows. Or before I decide to shell out some money for a new drive.
Thanks in advance for any help any one can provide.
PS Forgot to mention I also removed the NVIDIA IDE drivers and went back to the MS IDE drivers which also did not help. Also, did a search on these forums for anything related to this issue and could not find anything that might help besides the uninstalling of the NVIDIA IDE drivers and reformating.
