PX-708A Best for damaged CD reader (out of BenQ 1620 & Aopen 1608/ARR)

Just had the nightmare situation. Opened a Music CD and found that my prised disc had a crack in it almost from the center to the edge (stopped about 5mm from the edge)

Thought, “I own one of the best drives for reading damaged discs” so I fed it into the BenQ… CLUNK CLICK CLUNK CLUNK… Drive fails to read the disc after multiple attempts.

Next came the Aopen. This read the disc but failed to extract the data without errors (clicking), it did take a few attempts to reading the disc but it did make an attempt.

Lastly I re-installed my (faulty) PX-708 and fed it the disc. After some clicking and clunking the disc reported ready. Put it through EAC and it has extracted without ANY errors or using the error correction on EAC.

In all cases I used Nero tools to limit the drive to 4x & also told EAC to limit to 4x. It did take over an hour to read the disc but I now have a clean copy to burn to a new disc.

Now this is what Plextor quality means.

I just hope the PX-716 that should arrive tomorrow does the same.

i did an on-the-fly backup of a BADLY scratched and beat up pressed Audio CD (a limited edition import) with my Plextor Premium (reader) and my 708UF (writer). it took 18 hours (due to my Error Correction settings maxxed out) but the copy was flawless. the original disc was like $30 so it was worth my time to get a perfect copy.

I got my Plextor PX-716A on Friday so I had time to play with it over the long weekend. I have an original copy of Spiderman, and somehow the disc is defective. I think it’s a manufacturing problem because the disc does not have any scratches. I have tried to rip it using a LiteOn 1633S and a Plextor PX-708A without success. Then I tried the 716A, OHG!! Once it reached the section where the other drives failed to read and eventually quit, the 716A slowed down to 2x, read the defective area, and continued to rip the rest of the disc at 11-7x. I love this drive.

In my opinion Plextor still is the King of Quality…reason is I have a bad scratch on a dvd I needed to backup…my Toshiba dvdrom’s, Pioneer 107 dvdrw, Benq 1620 and Liteon 811 dvdrw could not rip the files off this 1 dvd, it would rip till 98% and 99% then got the cycle redunancy error…so I crossed my fingers and put the dvd into my Plextor 708a drive which is the first dvd burner I purchased in November 2003…Low and behold the 708a did not fail me, it ripped the disc perfectly in file mode…it saved the day for me…
