Well, this is my first post here. Actually I've been reading this forum for nearly 2 weeks already.
I bought a 176A and I believe the Date on the drive was Dec 2004, other code is 203 I think. It's installed so I'm just trying to recall this by memory.
Anyways, here's the problem. This drive is having difficulty reading CDs and writing to them also. I first tried Memorex cdrs, drive would not read or write to them at all. Then I tried Maxell cdrs and had similar results with the exception I did manage to actually burn one at 8x but the drive must have lowered the speed from there because it took forever to actually burn. The burn results seemed good with no errors. By the way I'm using the latest version of Nero. Well having run into these problems made be find this forum to seek answers. I read a hugh amount of posts but haven't arrived to any suitable answers. So, now I am posting here to see if anyone has any helpful advice.
Reading many posts it appeared the Plextor 176A does not perform well at all using cheap media (memorex and others). Taiyo Yuden seems to be one of the best to use for this drive. Well, I ordered 100 Taiyo Yuden cdrs directly for a reliable source mentioned here. Checking them out they appear to be real Taiyo Yuden and not fakes.
Next I once I received them I tried to do a Burn at 48x. These disks were rated for 52X. The Plextor drive could not burn these either. Just gave me a write error on leadin and ruined the disk.
I have tried to burn a Sony DVD-R with data and it worked as it should have at full speed no errors at all.
Seems to be writing perfectly on DVDs. Reads them fine also as I played a DVD movie in it.
The drive can read prerecorded cdrs sometimes but takes a long time to recognize the media. The drive spins up then down and up and down etc..
Now I do have a Lite-on Burner SOHW-1673s that was flashed to a 1693s in the same computer and it burns everything I put in it perfectly. It works 100%.
The Plextor drive has the latest 1.08 firmware installed. This was done because I was having problems reading and burnings cdrs. Still that didn't help. The drive is operating in ultra dma mode 4. It is sharing the IDE cable with the Lite-on drive. I have ran the internal diagnostic test by holding in the Eject button and inserting a Blank DVD and it passed because it ejected the disk at the end. I didn't try this test with a blank cdr because I didn't have anything better then memorex disks at that time.
Well, what do you think? Think this drive could be defective? I contacted Plextor and they just gave me basic things to check out and none of which helped either.
Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated.
