Prolonging Drive's lifetime

I spoke with Sony technical support recently and he recommended that the DVDRW drives are not supporsed to be turned on when I don’t use it for period of time e.g. 24/7 or overnight.

He mentioned that the average lifetime is about 1 1/2 year, which is true for my 510UL ~ 14 months.

Any take on this one?

Most have a MTBF spec of around 15000 hours and 1 1/2 years is about right. These drives are measured in on time not just burning time so I would agree with your post. Of course, if your computer is only on 8 hours a day you will get closer to 5 years. The drives in my tower are on much less so they will last forever.

Thanks for the info… my old drive can read just fine, but burning has lots of issues.
