Problems with Verbatim DVD-RW 6x

Howdy all,

I bought a pack of 5 labeled Verbatim DVD-RW 6X Certified with a SERL logo on it. Made in Taiwan.

Problem: I cannot use them in any way.
1)
I cannot format them on my desktop DVD Burner (LG RH4820V, with Firmware updated to 503011, bootloader flashed to r84), which is the reason I bought them, since the Burner is -R and -RW only.
The format procedure runs, then the machine says they’re not readable and must be formatted… and back to start without end.
2)
I cannot format, erase or burn them on my PC’s Burner (LG GSA-4160B flashed to A306) because Nero says they’re not rewritable (appear as empty but with 0 bytes free)

Anyone has some hint???

Sounds like the discs are too new for your machines and are most likely not supported. Do you have any 2x or 4x DVD-RWs that work?

The only other DVD-RW that I have is a 2X LG branded media which was provided with the burner. Of course it works, although only as 1x (but this is a limit of the burner, that works only at 1X in video mode).

I would be surprised if the firmware is too old for the 6X Verbatims… I flashed both the RH4820V and the GSA-4160B today, with the latest available firmware

These are the details of the working -RW media:

Maybe your LGs don’t like Verbatim…

All I can say is the Verbatim 6X DVD-RWs work great w/ my Benq 1640, and play movies flawlessly on my standalone DVD player.

For -R. +R and +RW I only use Verbatim and never had any issue (except some coasters on the new +R 8X since when they dropped the MCC003 media), both on the PC and on the standalone.

It’s just those -RW that don’t work

Bottom line: try 'em on someone else’s (preferably non-LG) burner.

I will, thanks for the hint.

My brother should have a -RW desktop burner, I might try with it.

If they work, I’ll format them in video mode with it and see if they work on my unit (now the problem is that the burner tries to format them as VR - as usual when a new RW disc is inserted - and stops there unsuccesfully… maybe it works once that the disc is already formatted in VIDEO mode)

I took one of my 6x discs to work and tried it in a Sony RDR-GX7 DVD recorder.

Doesn’t work!

Your standalone only supports burning up to 4x, correct?

Then -RW 6x is not suitable unless your device has got an newer firmware.

PC burners (some of them, anyway) seem to be more flexible…the Pioneer 108 burns these discs fine at its maximum speed of 4x.

I do have a new firmware… r84 is an update (the burner is only 4 months old and had a r81 firmware originally)

Anyway, I thought that a 6X media would have given backward compatibility, otherwise how can I use the burner in the future when only 6x or higher are out???

Moreover, the disk is recognized and the format procedure is performed, so I assumed that the burner does recognize the media

I tried on a LITE-ON SOHW-812S and they worked

But how can I use them on my LG’s…

I don’t know how old is your standalone DVD recorder (the LG RH4820V), but most standalone DVD recorders sold before 2005 could only record on 1-2X DVD-RW media (the Pioneer models are the main exceptions), and the higher speed 4-6X DVD-RW media are not backward compatible with older DVD burners. Read your owner’s manual to see if it specifically says it would support Ver.1.2 DVD-RW which means 4-6X DVD-RW. This is why most retail stores still sell 2X rated DVD-RW media, mainly for older (pre-2005 models) of standalone DVD recorders.

If your PC burner supports up to 8X DVD-R burning, then it should be able to support 4-6X DVD-RW media as well. Also remember that older DVD burners would have the same problem with 8X DVD+RW media if not supported in the specs.

I tried on a Benq 1640 and they worked perfect. :iagree:
I tried on a Plextor PX716A and they NOT worked.

The drive is about 5 months old.

The user manual says nothing about DVD-RW supported “versions”, but it mentions a “high speed copy” capability, although I never could use it (it only works with DVD-RW media used in VR format, which I don’t use)

Your drive may be only 5 months old, but the model was actually released in 2004 at least in the UK according to the following link:

http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xFS-LG_RH4820~NS-1~linkin_id-3032960

Therefore I would assume it used an older DVD burner only compatible with 1-2X DVD-RW media as most standalone recorders released before 2005 did. If you are still in doubt, try using a 4X DVD-RW disc to see if the recorder could record anything. If not, then your model is only compatible with 1-2X DVD-RW media and no firmware upgrade could change that.

Good luck.

Update:

1.on the Lite-ON drive, the media are recognized but only for 1x burning

2.On the PC Burner LG GSA4160B the Verbatim 6x are still not usable, even after erasing the media on the Lite-ON unit. I cannot erase them and when burning (5x maximum allowed) I get this error right at the start.

…guess you’re gonna have to bite the bullet with those discs…or get a new burner!
