Problems with Supermedia on nd-1300a

as the title says, i have the nd-1300a. unfortunately, i ordered the media without really thinking about compatibility (used to cd-r where pretty much everything works with everything). after getting my drive i successfully backed up a movie with the included media (verbatim data life plus). now i just tried to use this supermedia (http://supermediastore.com/supermedia-dvdminusr-4x.html).
nero starts burning at 2x, which is the speed that the chart says it should burn at, but then stops and eventually says the burn failed due to an illegal disc. i have firmware version 1.0B which i got from the german nec site. am i missing something or is this just really lousy media that may not work even though the chart on the site that sold it to me says should?

also, i apologize if the answer already exists in this forum. i did try searching but got no results. thanks in advance for any help/info.

Post the MID code and media id block of the disc please

at work right now so i can’t get that info. however, i did get it to burn using firmware v. 1.09. seems strange that 1.0B didn’t work and 1.09 did. anyway, i’ll post that info sometime this evening so you can let me know just how craptacular my media is. :slight_smile:

Herries’ 108v2 supports more media than the official firmware!
And should write with better quality to ‘unknown’ media such as the media in question here…

ok, maybe i’ll give it a shot at some point. i was just reading through the comments at herrie.org and it looks like someone else had success with 108v2 with the same type of media. i’m a little hesitant about messing with something that is working but the idea of it working better is enticing.

a couple more questions… the site that sold me the media claims that they are “grade A media”. does that actually mean anything? if so, what exactly does it mean?

Well if you’re having trouble with this “grade A” media, I would hate to see the “lower grade” media to come out of the same factory!
Some companies throw the term “Grade A” onto their media without much justification.
I doubt this media is very good quality…

My 108v2 supports these discs with the CORRECT writing strategy and @ 4x! Unlike :Z official NEC firmwares!

ok, that 4x is too tempting to resist. one question though before i flash, the release notes say that this is for official versions 1.06 - 1.08. i am running 1.09. should i go back to 1.08 before switching to 108v2 or does it not make a difference?

OK, now would you buy the supermedia again?, I love cheap media after it has been tested by the experts :^)
