You’re under the impression that ripping a DVD at home is against the law. It isn’t. The Sony decision that allowed copying films on one’s VHS is enough cover for one to copy at home. The Industry has never pursued anyone who merely copies at home, though it tried for years to find adequate encrypting to prevent it and failed. The Industry also says it is illegal to copy a disk in a warning with the FBI seal on it at the beginning of some films. This too is bogus. In order to make copying illegal, the industry would have to take the matter to court. After what happened in the Sony decision, they are loath to try that avenue again. So the Sony decision is left to provide plenty of cover for those ripping copies at home.
