Problems with new SH-S202H

So I bought this burner the other day as my LiteOn is starting to die. It seems to be similar to the “raved about” 203B only it’s IDE version.

Anyway, I’ve been having heaps of problems with it, such as:

  1. Writing lead-in seems to take a long time, when it succeeds.
  2. In EAC, ImgBurn and Nero sometimes it’s still writing lead-in after a few minutes and I have to switch computer off to regain control.
  3. Several EAC cue/wav images have failed to burn with ImgBurn and EAC.

I’m using Sony media which has never given me a problem before. Though I’ve tried some others without success. And these things are happening both with dvd’s and cd-r’s. Yesterday I went to backup around 1.5 gig of files onto a Sony DVD-R using Nero. The burn seemed to complete but upon verifying I got errors such as this:

Next I made an iso using ImgBurn of the exact same files and used Nero to burn the image. Upon verifying the exact same errors on the exact same sectors occured. Googling the errors it seems this can be caused by all sorts of things - bad ide cable, bad ide drivers, IMAPI service enabled (mines not), dirty lens etc. However I’m sure my hardware is fine and have swapped cables etc with no change. And there’s no other drives on the ide channels. I see there’s a couple of posts here where people found it was a bad burner to blame.

So do you think that is the case here? I know sometimes Nero itself is at fault with these things but since I’m having problems with ImgBurn and EAC as well - bad burner do you think?

I knew someone would say that. :slight_smile:

That was just a test since slower speeds weren’t working either. I just came back from exchanging the drive for another of the same model. Exactly the same thing at 8x speed. A disc scan with cdspeed shows all the discs are bad just after the beginning (around the 900 sector pos). But the rest of the data is fine. I’ve tried 3 different types/brands which have been good to me in the past, and the errors are all in the exact same place. If it was only nero playing up I could understand. But as I said even the excellent ImgBurn is freaking out sometimes, especially with audio cd images. My mobo only has a single IDE connector. There are no other drives connected to it and I only have one sata hd.

But this is looking bad.

Does anyone have some other things I could try? I’ve swapped the sata port of the hd, changed the ide cable etc. Chipset drivers are up-to-date. Don’t know what else to check.

Make sure it’s not a JMICRON bus you have put the SATA burner in.

It’s not a SATA burner it’s an IDE burner. I have a SATA HD.

JMICRON makes IDE buses also.

Ok, I just installed an image of my XP system from months ago when dvd burning definitely worked. I installed the newest Nero Lite onto it, and the exact same thing happened. Can someone please give me some tips on what to try to get this working please?

Can you elaborate, chef? I know the media may not be the best but I’ve owned a handful of burners and they’ve never been a problem. Also, that’s just one example. I’m having problems with cd-r’s too. And what’s wrong with the controller? I was thinking of buying an IDE PCI card to test this, but it would be much cheaper to just get a SATA burner.

I just went down to try and get some Verbatim dvd’s and they didn’t have any. So I bought some TDK’s, and I get the exact same error. Why do you say it’s the controller? I’ve had 2 other burners on this system without a problem. What am I to do? What can I try? Would a SATA burner work better or not? I don’t care about the money as someone could use this burner if it’s not stuffed. Would I be better off with a SATA burner? I just don’t understand the controller comment. This is a decent mobo.

And what part of the nero log tells you it’s the controller?

Anyway, yes the mobo has a JM368 ide controller chip. But what should I do about it. I’m still reading through all the posts about JMicron problems, but should I try the JMicron IDE drivers instead of the MS ones or something? I just don’t believe they’re making burners that won’t work on a lot of motherboards.

Avoid putting a burner in such a connection. I think in most motherboard manuals it also states that they are not good for ATAPI devices. Buy a seperate add in card if you need more connections.

It’s more that they make motherboards that don’t work with burners.

My motherboard manual says “…connects up to 2 IDE devices such as hard drives and optical drives…”. As I said my previous LiteOn drive worked fine. Then again it’s started to play up so maybe the controller has slowly killed it?? :slight_smile:

I’ve searched for others having similar problems with the same motherboard and it seems there’s not many. However conflicts between certain sata ports and the ide have been mentioned. So I’ll try swapping them round again.

All-in-all, this is my own fault. I thought it’d be easier to get an ide burner since my older comps don’t have sata. And yet I could’ve bought a sata burner online for half the price I paid locally. Big mistake.

I solved the problem. It was a Daemon Tools conflict. I’ve just burnt 2 dvds without a hitch after uninstalling DT. I thought the conflicts were fixed several versions ago. And I expected at least one of you would’ve picked up from my logs I had it installed, if it could cause problems. :slight_smile: Thanks though guys for making me aware of the many controller issues that plague new systems.

Now, does anyone know if simply disabling all Daemon’s virtual drives is enough to prevent the conflicts? I really need virtual drives a bit at the moment and constantly installing/uninstalling DT would be a nightmare.

Yeah thanks chef. It’s all working fine now with the new version of DT. Someone at the ImgBurn forums mentioned there were apparent problems with the previous version and the change log shows some significant bug fixes.
