Problems with NEC 3500AG playback/burning

vbimport

#1

Hi guys,

In the last week or so, I’ve noticed problems with my NEC 3500AG drive. Not only does it skip on playback of DVDs, but it is also taking a lot longer to produce burns. I tried to burn a DVD-R at 12x the other day, and it took around forty minutes! I’ve also noticed that the buffer rate is very inconsistent.

I’ve tried some of the very simple things to fix the problem. Firstly, I re-flashed my drive with 2.TB, then I defragmented by hard disk, then I checked that my DMA settings are at “DMA if available”. I even went as far as to uninstall the drive from Device Manager, letting Windows XP pick it up again. Unfortunately, nothing has worked.

Below is a log from the last DVD-R (Datawrite Yellow discs that I’ve used for years) that I burned (the one that took forty minutes).

Does anyone know of any more checks I can do to work out what is wrong with the drive? I note that someone on another thread (from 2004) said that they swapped around their IDE cables and this fixed their similar problems. What should I be thinking of doing next?

Your drive is running in PIO mode.

DMA settings are at “DMA if available”.

What mode do it actually show.

#3

Thanks for the reply, jbv.

I’ve attached a screen dump of what it says. My NEC drive is the secondary IDE channel.

#4

Remove the secondary IDE channel from the device manager and reboot. It should auto-reinstall.
Screenshots should be saved as PNG or GIF, not as JPEG.

#5

This has fixed the problem - thank you very much indeed.

I had noticed that the drive showed PIO mode (though DMA if available), but since this appeared to be an unchangable setting, I had assumed that it was supposed to be like that.

I stand corrected. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks again!
