I'm having problems with my Liteon drives and I hope someone out here can help. I've searched through this forum on both my drives and haven't found this particular issue, so I apologize in advance if it's already been covered and I missed.
My system is Intel P4 2.4ghz, Win XP home (5.1.2600 or SP1, build 2600), 512 mb DDR333 memory. I'm not sure of the chipset (how can you tell?). It was built by a local computer builder with a great rep. I usually use TDK or Memorex CD-Rs -- right now, I'm using Memorex 52X/700MB. Firmware is 6S0C (for the 52246S) and YH0X (for the other).
Like many others at Liteon's official forum, I started having problems with my LTR-52246S out of the blue, after no system changes or anything of the sort. The burning speed started to slow and eventually stopped burning altogether, usually resulting in buffer underrun errors. I made no system changes whatsover between the time it worked fine and now.
The LTN-526 worked fine this whole time and, in fact, I used it to do DAE on a few hundred CDs.
I searched around the Liteon forum and here, and it seemed like the best answer was to uninstall the primary & secondary IDE channels and let Windows reinstall them. I did that and so far, the burner is performing better -- it'll burn CDs again, though it still seems to be more inconsistent in its speed than previously. With SmartBurn, it'll crank up to 52x then slow down to 1x and back up into the 30s. But at least it's burning. For now.
Now the issue is that the LTN-526 won't work at all. It shows as working fine in Device Mgr and Nero InfoTool doesn't have a problem seeing it, but it won't recognize any CDs I put in, audio or data.
I tried again, unistalling both drives and the IDE channels and letting WinXP reinstall them, but that hasn't fixed the problem.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help. I'm a doctoral student and the time I've lost messing with these drives is killing me! So any help is very much appreciated.
