hi everyone, first of all want to thank to the site, admins and all the participants!! after searching the forum have decided to post, hope that is the right place for it. I have several problmes with my LG GSA-4163B (A104) dvd writer. First of all here is my pc and the softwares

Mainboard : ASUS - A8N5X
CPU : AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor 3200+
RAM : 2 x 512 MB Kingston PC3200
VGA : 256 MB ASUS EN6600/TD
HDD : 160 GB SAMSUNG SATA II
Optical Drivers : LG GSA-4163B / LG GCC-4521B
Floppy : 1 Pc
Case : 460 W FEEL HURRICANE II

Firstly it was like that

but there were some problems with Nero 7 and I installed the latest Nero 7, in that period have installed DVDInfo 4,36 but it doesn’t work too and I removed it. After installing the latest Nero 7

the following happened

also UDMA 2 are available

and now here are some burn tests, the tests are made by LG GCC-4521B (1.05) DVD-COMBO.

as you see at about 0,9 gb there is an extreme growth of pie and pif for different kinds of disc. The writer is new, max. 30 discs burned. What could you recommend me?? Thanks in advance!!

#2

I recommend you getting another drive for scanning, not all drives are good scanners and definitely LG drives aren’t. If you want scans you should either get a LiteOn (best choice for scans), BenQ or NEC.

#3

Wow, I didn’t know that LG EVER BOTHERED to add scanning to their drives…
In general DVD-ROM drives, even if combo, aren’t the best scanners.

#4

I believe that most Combo drives are capable of scanning, now about their reliability … that’s another story.

#5

Not sure what you think the problem is really, other than the language now being turkish.

None of the burns are showing a high number of PIFs & the 0 QS scores are largely down to single spikes that can be ignored.

As the other members point out non-burners are very unreliable scanners & their results are not indicative of good or bad burns.

Upgrade the firmware to A105 or A106 as these did improve the burn quality of some media.

#6

thanks for the attention!! I wanted to upgrade the firmware to A105 but there was the following statement at LG’s official site: “This firmware update is for drives with original firmware versions below A104.”. unfortunately for my region (Türkiye) the latest firmware is A105, A106 is available for Canada, etc. I hope that the bad scan results are due to scanning with dvd-combo drive!! before buying one more burner I want to try some more ways to increase the test results, searching for them :p. nowadays here users of Philips SPD2400L1 are very pleased from the drive as a burner, is it a good scanner too?? do you recommend it for my system next to my LG GSA-4163B and LG GCC-4521B?? I see that Lite-On is a good drive but unfortunately here it isn’t widespread, there are few stores selling it and don’t know how’s the after-sell service etc.

#7

OT: The Philips drive you mentioned is a rebadged LiteOn 1635S (I have two, which I crossflashed to LiteOn). They are excellent scanners.

I have one of them in a system with an LG 4167B, they complement each other well.

#8

I can’t see that the region you’re in really matters when it comes to the firmware & I updated from A104 to A105 & I’ve A106 if I decide to update. I’d say just do it.

The SPD2400 is as Arachne says a Liteon 1635S and with the test firmware here is producing some excellent burns. I was one of the first on this forum to get one & cross flash to the Liteon & I have no regrets about doing it.

I’d say replace the combi drive with the Philips/Liteon as this is a good CD burner as well.

Ignore that message. It is a mis translation from Korean, the language which the instructions were originally written in. It should actually read “…for drives with original firmawre versions A104 and below” (when trying to upgrade with A105). These incorrect instructions have been around for quite a long time and come with every version of firmware. It will work.

It does not matter which country’s LG service site you download firmware for your drive from. The drives are pretty much identical and came from the same factory in China (some early ones came from Korea but still work fine with A106 - I know because mine is like that and I am using A106) so they will work with A106. A106 was distributed using LG’s auto-update tool to people in various countries. However, for some odd reason, only Canada’s LG service site offers the firmware. However, A106 will work fine with your drive.

thanks a lot!! one more question. I installed LG ODD Online Firmware Update 1.01.0401.01 and run it. it’s notified me that there is a firmware update for current GCC-4521B 1.05 to 1.07 and for GSA-4163B A104 to A106. Should I directly update firmware to 1.07 and A106 or firstly to 1.06 and A105, then to 1.07 and A106 respectively?? also should I follow the Critical Instructions: (to be followed carefully) listed on the LG official site for updating the firmware?? (as 1. Connect the drive as “master” by it self, on the secondary IDE controller with no other device on the same IDE cable, making note to set the jumper on the back of the drive to the “master” position. etc.)

#11

When updating firmwares, you can go straight to the latest one.

#12

You can just upgrade straight to the latest version of firmware available for each drive. There is no need to upgrade to each successive version before getting to the latest.

LG’s “critical instructions” are a bit of a “play safe” feature. Many people (myself included) have flashed LG writers connected as slave or together with another DVD device attached on the same cable. However, if you have never flashed a DVD writer/ROM drive before and feel a little uncomfortable, go ahead and follow the “critical instructions”.

Whatever you do, don’t multi-task when flashing the drive and make sure you don’t have a disc in the tray of whichever DVD device you are flashing.

Thank you all for cooperation!! I’ve updated combo and dvd burner, here is nero info tool ss

as you see still there’s problem with reading speed of dvd burner (n/a according to nero info tool), any suggestions for that??

and here are the tests of Verbatim DVD+R 8x MCC 003 @ 12x

I think that dvd burner burns better and/or the combo become more reliable :stuck_out_tongue: but I want to have better burns so decided to buy one more dvd burner. try to make a decision between Philips SPD2400BM and Benq DW1640 or 1650. unfortunately I couldn’t find any review for Philips SPD2400BM but here in Türkiye it has better burn results than Benq’s.

I’m not sure why Nero Infotool shows your read speed as n/a. Mine does not show that but I am using a different version of Nero Infotool from you (I am using Nero 6 which comes with a different verison of Nero Infotool). However, I have noticed Nero Infotool does not report the read and write speed correctly unless you have a disc in the drive when you run it. Try putting a DVD disc (e.g. the Verbatim you burned) into the drive before running Infotool. See if shows different results.

Really hard to say whether the burn is better because of the firmware update, or your scanning drive reads this disc better. Probably best to wait until you get your new drive to double check.

As for what that Philips drive is, this thread might be of help to you :
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=165651

I would probably get the 1650 or 1640 instead. I have a 1640 and it makes a very good companion to my 4163B. Most of the discs my 4163B does not like to burn, my 1640 will burn very well and the other way around. The features also complement each other nicely (e.g. 1640 has quality scanning, 4163B has DVD-RAM support). I have gotten very good burn quality with my 1640 as well. The 1650 is BenQ’s follow up model to the 1640. The 1640 and 1650 series of BenQ writers is very hard to beat in terms of features/burn quality. They are both somewhat legendary by now.

I don’t think enough people have used that Philips drive to properly comment on how good it is. So one drive nobody is really sure about, and the other two which have a well established reputation. I would not bother taking the risk with the Philips drive.

Hi,

Nero Infotool 4.0.3.0 does this, 3.0.7 shows the correct figures. It does not matter, if a disc is inserted or not.

I’ve tried it with last burned Verbatim dvd inside and it works, thanks!!

thanks for the info!!

by the way I purchased Philips SPD2400BM on Thursday and here are some quality and benchamark tests. test results made by LG GCC-4521B dvd-combo are given in the links for comparison. there are only Philips SPD2400BM's benchmark test results when both of burners accomplished the tests. there is only one for showing that Philips SPD2400 reads at higher speed than LG GSA-4163B.

the problem was that I’ve done the tests with dvd-combo before!! Philips SPD2400 is an excellent scanner/reader, don’t burn any media yet but I think that is an excellent writer too  thank you all for paying attention!!

Good to see you got that sorted out in the end. Looks like those Magic 8x DVD-R discs are not very good stuff. One disc burns fine and the other has reading problems. Too much inconsistency. It’s not because of the media code though. I have CMC MAG. AE1 discs that burn with very good burn quality on the 4163B with A106. Magic just probable uses lower quality CMC stuff.
